Alessandro Romeo and his parents; the couple's invitation to Adam SandlerAlessandro Romeo had no idea what was about to happen when he stepped into the church on his wedding day. The moment a violinist began playing Adam Sandler’s “Grow Old with You,” he looked up, stunned.
The sweet, deeply personal surprise captured in a viral video, posted by his now-wife Dimitra, is captioned, “When your husband is Adam Sandler’s #1 fan.” It shows Alessandro walking down the aisle, visibly caught off guard, while the soft strings of Sandler’s love song from The Wedding Singer play in the background.
“We met at a mutual friend’s birthday party,” Dimitra Romeo tells PEOPLE. “We didn’t really talk. We just kind of looked at each other and that was it.” One month later, they matched on Hinge. “Alessandro messaged me, ‘Were you at that party?’ ” she says. “And the rest is history.”
Nearly six years later, the couple tied the knot surrounded by family, friends — and one subtle but unforgettable nod to Alessandro’s favorite actor. “He’s loved Adam Sandler from the first day I met him,” Dimitra says. “He’s made me watch all the movies.”
She knew their wedding day needed something Sandler-inspired. So when it came time to pick the aisle songs, Dimitra decided to surprise him. “We had a live violinist at the church, and I told him to play ‘Grow Old with You’ for Alessandro’s walk,” she says. “He had no idea until he heard it in that moment.”
For Alessandro, it instantly hit home. “You’re walking down the aisle, all eyes on you, and kind of stressing out,” he tells PEOPLE. “Then the song starts, and it brings a smile to your face. You just know right away, and it was perfect.”
Friends and family noticed the moment, too. “Even my brother, who got married recently, used that song in his speech,” Alessandro says. “It was special to carry that meaning into our day.”
The groom's love for Sandler goes beyond movie quotes and nostalgia. “I admire how he’s always stayed authentic,” Alessandro says. “Even the serious movies feel lighthearted, and he’s always true to himself and to his friends, which means a lot to me.”
Plus, Dimitra wanted to give her groom a moment of his own. “Grooms don’t usually get surprises like that,” she says. “I just wanted him to have that feeling of being celebrated, too.”
He certainly has now; the clip quickly went viral. “I started getting notifications nonstop,” Dimitra says. “I gained 4,000 followers overnight.”
With the love came a little criticism, too. “Some people were mad that Adam Sandler wasn’t in the video,” she says, laughing. “But if you’re a true fan, you know the song.”
Still, the Internet overwhelmingly embraced the couple’s heartfelt, personal twist. “It was just one of those little things that made the day uniquely ours,” Dimitra says.
That attention to detail showed up everywhere. “I’m really into event planning, so we had stir sticks that said ‘The Romeos’ and a phone booth where guests left us voice messages,” Dimitra shares. “People even sang to us, and our first dance was to ‘Lifetime’ by Justin Bieber.”
That song, she says, tells their love story. “We first heard it when we had just started dating, and it’s always felt like us,” she says. “It was the perfect fit for our first dance.”
As for the proposal, Alessandro went all out to surprise her — no easy feat. “She’s really quick and always picks up on things,” he says. “So I had to get creative.”

Then she saw Alessandro, standing with a sign. “I was shocked,” she says. “I had no idea it was going to happen that day.”
Months later, their wedding brought everything full circle. “We wanted a timeless, classic vibe — black and white, live music, Sinatra during cocktail hour,” Dimitra says. “But the surprise song made it unforgettable.”
The couple even sent an invitation to Sandler himself. “We didn’t expect anything back,” Dimitra says. “But he sent a signed postcard.”
That signed card now has a special place in their home. “It’s framed in the middle of our living room,” she says. “All our photos are on the side but Adam Sandler is in the center.”
For them, “Grow Old with You” isn’t just a song. It’s a reminder of what love looks like in real life. “It’s about staying together through the highs and lows,” Alessandro says. “I found my person, and now we get to grow old together.”
Dimitra agrees. “It’s in the little things like making coffee in the morning or letting the other person hold the remote,” she says. “That’s what love is.”
Their advice to other couples? Make your wedding day your own. “Add personal touches that matter to you, not just your guests,” Alessandro says. “That’s what you’ll remember.”
Dimitra adds. “And don’t be afraid to have fun with it. We just wanted to make people smile and I think we did.”
