Bret Michaels Withdraws From State Fair, Denies Political Motives!

Bret Michaels, the iconic former frontman of the rock band Poison, has announced his withdrawal from the Great American State Fair, a significant 16-day free festival slated to take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. from June 25 through July 10. The event, organized to commemorate America's 250th anniversary, has faced increasing scrutiny following Michaels' decision, making him the sixth act to scratch his name from the lineup since the music program was unveiled by Freedom 250 on Wednesday, May 27.
In a detailed social media post, Michaels articulated the reasoning behind his difficult choice. He stated that what was initially presented as a celebration of the country had "evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of." Furthermore, he cited significant concerns regarding the safety of his fans, band, crew, family, and himself, mentioning "threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable." This commitment to safety and integrity ultimately led him to step away from the performance.
Michaels was keen to clarify that his decision was not politically motivated. He asserted, "This isn’t about politics. It’s about staying true to what I’ve always believed in." He emphasized the importance of individual opinions, recognizing them as freedoms fought for by veterans, which he deeply respects. However, as a father, friend, and bandmate, he affirmed his responsibility to take threats and safety concerns seriously, leading to his principled stand.
The Great American State Fair is managed by Freedom 250, a not-for-profit organization established by a task force under the Trump administration. Its primary mandate is to plan and lead the official semiquincentennial anniversary celebrations for the United States. Michaels' departure highlights a broader trend, as his 'u-turn' follows similar exits from other notable artists including Morris Day & The Time, Young MC, Milli Vanilli, and Martina McBride, signaling a growing unease among performers associated with the event. While some artists, such as Vanilla Ice and C+C Music Factory, have publicly reaffirmed their commitment, Flo Rida has yet to issue a statement regarding his involvement.
Beyond the controversy surrounding the festival, Bret Michaels boasts a distinguished career in music. As a pivotal member of Poison, he contributed to 12 titles charting on the Billboard Hot 100, including the 1988 No. 1 hit "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," which held the top spot for three weeks. Poison also secured 12 entries on the Billboard 200, with three reaching the top 10. As a solo artist, Michaels has successfully placed three titles on the Billboard 200. Currently, Poison is celebrating its own milestone: 40 years since the release of their seminal 1986 glam metal studio album, "Look What the Cat Dragged In."
Despite his withdrawal from the Great American State Fair, Michaels has assured fans that his scheduled Live and Amplified Tour 2026 will proceed as planned, unaffected by this recent development.
