FCT, Abuja - President Bola Tinubu has reportedly agreed to reinstate Siminalayi Fubara as the Governor of Rivers state, but with a critical condition: he must not seek re-election in 2027.

The agreement was reached during a private meeting on Thursday night, June 26, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Those in attendance included Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); Governor Fubara; Martin Amaewhule, the suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly; and a select group of lawmakers.

According to insiders familiar with the negotiations, President Tinubu’s decision is part of a broader effort to restore political stability in Rivers state.

However, the terms come with significant concessions from Fubara.

One of the main conditions is that the governor must abandon any ambition to run for a second term in 2027.

Sources say he has agreed to this in exchange for completing his current four-year tenure without further political friction.

In a major win for Wike, the deal allows him to nominate all 23 local government chairpersons across the state.

This move grants him control of the grassroots political machinery, a powerful leverage as Nigeria approaches the next general elections.

Additionally, Fubara is said to have agreed to pay all outstanding entitlements owed to the 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike. In return, they will not pursue impeachment proceedings against him.

Although the lawmakers had earlier defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), they have continued to claim their seats in the House.

Their legitimacy has been a source of legal and political contention.

Sources present at the meeting described the resolution as a breakthrough in Tinubu’s efforts to broker peace, but acknowledged it came with a heavy political price for Fubara.

“The arrangement is clear: no second term, no local government control, and peace will return.
“Wike is the real winner here. By controlling the LG chairmen, he maintains influence ahead of 2027," said one source.

The rift between Fubara and his predecessor Wike began over control of the state’s political structure.

The infighting destabilised governance and led to multiple attempts to remove Fubara from office.

Legit.ng earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu finally suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy and the Rivers State House of Assembly following the political crisis rocking the state.

In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday night, March 18, Tinubu pointed out three times that the suspended governor abused the rule of law.

The president also recalled that he had made efforts to ensure a lasting peace, but the parties involved have refused to comply.
