Breaking: Tinubu Appoints First Female DG for Nigerian Law School

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr. Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Law School. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Bayo Onanuga, Presidential Spokesman. The appointment takes effect from January 10, 2026, for a four-year term, marking a new chapter for the country’s foremost legal training institution.
Dr. Odusote, 57, currently serves as the Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus of the Nigerian Law School. Her appointment is historic, as she will become the first woman to lead the institution since its establishment in 1962. She will succeed Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, whose tenure as Director-General ends on January 9, 2026, after eight years of service.
A distinguished legal scholar and administrator, Dr. Odusote began her academic journey at Obafemi Awolowo University, where she obtained her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988 and later earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the same institution, specializing in company and commercial law. She furthered her education in the United Kingdom, obtaining a PhD in Law from the University of Surrey, with a research focus on public law and the administration of justice.
Dr. Odusote joined the Nigerian Law School in 2001 as a lecturer and has since risen through the ranks, distinguished by strong academic credentials and leadership capacity. Her career progression includes serving as Head of the Academic Department, Director of Academics, and Head of Campus. She also served as a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom.
In addition to her administrative roles, Dr. Odusote has made significant contributions to legal scholarship, with numerous publications in reputable local and international law journals. She has presented papers at several legal education conferences and has served on committees of both the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Bar Association.
As Director-General, Dr. Odusote will be responsible for the overall academic leadership, administrative management, and strategic direction of the Nigerian Law School across its campuses. She will also serve as the primary liaison between the institution, the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers, and the Nigerian Bar Association, ensuring effective coordination within Nigeria’s legal education system.
