Breaking: Police Apprehend Woman in Disturbing Child Abuse Case in Nigeria

Police in Anambra State, South-east Nigeria, have arrested a 36-year-old woman, Anulika Onyeanusia, in connection with an alleged case of child pornography. The arrest was made following the emergence of a disturbing video purportedly showing the woman using sex toys on a minor. In a statement released on Friday, police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed that operatives apprehended the suspect earlier that day in the Onitsha Area of the state.

During the operation, police operatives also successfully rescued four children, aged two, three, six, and nine years, from the suspect's custody. Additionally, sex toys and other items deemed crucial for the ongoing investigation were recovered. The suspect is currently being held by the police, and authorities are intensifying their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence, including exploring the potential involvement of other individuals. The suspect's husband is also undergoing interrogation to ascertain any connection he might have to the alleged acts.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnanna Ama, expressed deep disturbance over the alleged incident, describing it as unacceptable. He particularly emphasized the gravity of the matter given that it involves the exploitation and abuse of children, who are inherently incapable of protecting themselves. Commissioner Ama has directed a comprehensive and professional investigation into the case, assuring that the rescued children will receive appropriate care and protection. He underscored that beyond the investigation and potential prosecution, the Command's paramount priority is ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of the victims.

To this end, the police command plans to collaborate closely with relevant child-protection and support agencies to guarantee that the children receive necessary care, protection, counselling, and other vital support for their recovery. Commissioner Ama affirmed that the identities and privacy of the children will be rigorously protected throughout the entire process, ensuring they are treated with compassion and sensitivity. He also commended the efforts of vigilante operatives, bloggers, and other residents who provided crucial information that aided the investigation and led to the suspect's arrest.

In Nigeria, both sexual exploitation and child pornography are strictly prohibited by law. Section 32 of the Child Rights Act 2003 explicitly outlaws sexual abuse and exploitation of children, with offenders facing up to 14 years imprisonment upon conviction. Similarly, Section 17 (1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition), Enforcement and Administration Act 2015 criminalises child pornography, prescribing a minimum of seven years imprisonment and a fine of not less than N1 million for those found guilty. Furthermore, the Cybercrimes Act 2024 also includes provisions against child pornography.

The country has seen several convictions for child pornography and sexual exploitation. Notable cases include the Federal High Court in Lagos sentencing Olukeye Adeayo Olalekan to 76 years imprisonment for child pornography-related charges in June 2025. In 2024, a Lagos Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court handed a life imprisonment sentence to Nurudeen Nasiru for introducing pornographic videos to and sexually assaulting his 13-year-old neighbour's daughter.
