Breaking: PDP Ignites 2027 Race, Zones Presidential Ticket to Southern Nigeria

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently engaged in high-stakes consultations leading up to a pivotal National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for today. This crucial meeting aims to affirm the party's National Convention, slated for November 2025, and ratify the report submitted by the zoning committee, which is headed by Bayelsa State governor, Senator Duoye Diri.
In preparation for the 102nd NEC session, three of the party's primary organs—the National Working Committee (NWC), the National Caucus, and the Board of Trustees (BoT)—held separate meetings on Sunday. The objective of these meetings was to meticulously harmonise the agenda for the upcoming NEC deliberations, underscoring the significance of a unified approach within the party.
Preceding these high-level discussions, the seven governors elected under the PDP platform convened on Saturday in Zamfara State. During their meeting, the governors firmly pledged to resist any attempts that might undermine or scuttle the national convention, which is intended to be held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November. This commitment highlights the governors' resolve to ensure the convention proceeds as planned.
The composition and roles of the party's organs are integral to its functioning. The NWC, responsible for the day-to-day administration of the party, includes key officials such as the National Chairman, Deputy National Chairman (South), National Secretary, National Treasurer, and National Youth Leader, among others. The PDP National Caucus is a broader body, comprising the national chairman, serving and former governors, serving and former principal officers of the National Assembly, and members of both the NWC and BoT, reflecting a wide representation of party leaders.
The NEC meeting, taking place in Abuja, is widely perceived by most PDP leaders as a strategic and defining moment for the leading opposition party. The ratification of the zoning formula is particularly critical as it will shape the party's decisions regarding power sharing between the North and the South, as well as amongst the six geopolitical zones. Furthermore, this ratification will explicitly define whether the PDP's presidential candidate will emerge from the North or the South. For other national offices, stakeholders in the respective zones typically micro-zone key positions among specific clusters of states to foster balance and stability within the party structure.
Last Thursday, a significant development saw a group of PDP leaders from the southern zones—South-West, South-South, and South-East—convene a summit on zoning in Lagos. At this meeting, they resolved to forge a common front ahead of the NEC meeting. Notable attendees included Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, and Governor Diri of Bayelsa. Governor Mbah of Enugu State was represented by his deputy. Other prominent PDP chieftains present were former Governor Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom, ex-Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun, former presidential candidate Ben Obi, and former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Olabode George. However, it is important to note that another group of PDP leaders from the South subsequently distanced themselves from the resolutions made at this Lagos meeting.
According to the official timetable and schedule of activities for the PDP's 2025 elective national convention, the primary agenda for the NEC meeting in Abuja is the review and adoption of the report presented by the 44-member zoning committee. The document also outlines subsequent steps, indicating that from Tuesday, the PDP will initiate zonal meetings to deliberate on national offices, with these discussions expected to conclude by September 1. As of Sunday, beyond the governors' stated intent to proceed with the convention, no other PDP organs had issued further comments on these ongoing developments, suggesting a period of anticipation preceding the crucial NEC decision.
