Breaking: Joint Security Forces Heroically Rescue 20 Kidnapped Youth Corps Members, Families Paid Millions in Ransom
Families of 20 abducted NYSC members revealed they paid millions in ransom before their eventual rescue by security agencies in Imo State. The week-long ordeal, which involved initial demands of N50 million per victim, highlighted significant security risks for young Nigerians traveling for national service and showcased a complex multi-agency rescue effort.
The abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and one civilian on October 1, near Umunoha along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State, triggered a week-long ordeal that deeply affected their families and highlighted significant security challenges across Nigeria. These young graduates were traveling from Ibadan to their respective orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom when their buses were ambushed and attacked.
During the seven days the victims spent in captivity, the abductors made exorbitant ransom demands, initially asking for N50 million per individual. The desperate families, in their bid to secure the safe return of their loved ones, engaged in intense negotiations, which eventually led to a reduction in these staggering figures. Many relatives were compelled to pay substantial sums; some reported paying over N3 million, while others, including a father of a rescued son and Alirat Wahab, the mother of another corps member, confirmed payments of N6 million. Alirat Wahab detailed how her family struggled to raise the N6 million after the kidnappers initially demanded N50 million per head, then N15 million, before finally settling. The families often converged in Ibadan, Oyo State, to collectively raise the funds, which were then transported to Imo State for delivery to the kidnappers. The emotional and financial toll on these families was immense, with one mother describing her immense relief upon learning of her son's release, stating it felt "as though the chains all over me were loosened" after suffering from sleeplessness and illness due to the profound anxiety.
The successful rescue operation was the culmination of a complex, coordinated effort involving multiple security agencies, including the Nigerian military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other security formations. On October 7, at approximately 4:28 pm, all 20 prospective corps members and the additional hostage were safely recovered at Amakohia Ubi Village in Imo State. This breakthrough followed sustained intelligence-led operations and meticulous search-and-rescue missions. Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, shed light on the difficulties encountered during the operation, including the use of drone surveillance to locate the kidnappers' camp, which was discovered to be planted with improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This critical information necessitated the deployment of specialized operational equipment, such as bulldozers and armored personnel carriers, to ensure the safety of both the victims and the operatives during the intervention.
Following their release, the victims were immediately taken for comprehensive medical examination and necessary care at a DSS medical facility. There, they were met by the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, accompanied by senior security officials, including the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the State Director of DSS, and the Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade. The Nigeria Police Force officially announced the rescue, commending the exemplary operational coordination and collaboration among the participating security agencies. Earlier, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, had deployed Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, DIG Shehu Nadada, to Imo State specifically to coordinate the search-and-rescue efforts, spurred by appeals from parents to prominent figures like the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.
Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, publicly commended the security agencies for their swift intervention, inter-agency collaboration, and patriotism, noting that the discreet handling of the sensitive situation was paramount for ensuring the security of lives. He also praised the families for their resilience and patience during the trying period and urged Nigerians to maintain faith in the federal government's capacity to overcome the prevailing security challenges across the country. While the immediate priority was the victims' recovery and well-being, investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for this abduction, with the aim of bringing them to justice and reinforcing public safety. The incident underscored the significant security risks that continue to confront young graduates undertaking mandatory national service, particularly when traveling long distances across the nation.
