BREAKING: Gunmen Kill Two Police Officers, Burn Two Vehicles In Enugu Checkpoint Attack | Sahara Reporters
Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters on Friday that the assailants set fire to two vehicles—a patrol van and a Sienna vehicle—used by the police officers for checkpoint operations.
Tragedy has once again struck in Enugu State, as gunmen, believed to be armed robbers, killed two police officers during an attack on a checkpoint.
The attack occurred Thursday evening at a police checkpoint in Agbogugu, located along the Enugu-Ozalla-Port Harcourt Old Road, in the Awgu Local Government Area of the state.
Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters on Friday that the assailants set fire to two vehicles—a patrol van and a Sienna vehicle—used by the police officers for checkpoint operations. The attackers ensured the vehicles were completely destroyed and seized the officers' weapons before fleeing the scene.
One eyewitness, speaking anonymously to SaharaReporters, revealed that the attackers faced little resistance and calmly drove through Agbogugu town as they made their escape. The source identified the officers who were killed as the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) and another officer, known locally as "Big."
"Yesterday evening, gunmen suspected to be armed robbers attacked a police checkpoint in Agbogugu along Enugu-Ozalla-Port Harcourt Old Road, killing two police officers. They also burned two vehicles, a Sienna and a police patrol van,” the eyewitness said.
“Police from Enugu also came and took the burned vehicles away. I learned that the assailants carted away the slain officers' weapons.”
SaharaReporters reports that in recent months, multiple individuals, including police officers, have been killed in a series of attacks across the Enugu North Senatorial District.
Efforts to contact the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, for a statement regarding the incident were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or text messages.
