Boxing World Mourns Legendary Heavyweight Joe Bugner at 75

Passing of a Heavyweight Icon
The boxing world is in mourning following the death of former heavyweight champion Joe Bugner, who passed away at the age of 75. The British Boxing Board of Control confirmed the sad news, stating that Bugner died at his care home in Brisbane, Australia, and extended its condolences to his family.
From Hungary to the Ring
Born in Hungary, Bugner moved to the United Kingdom as a child in 1956 and rose to prominence in the boxing arena, becoming a significant figure in the heavyweight division. Throughout his 32-year career, he famously held the British, European, and Commonwealth heavyweight titles, establishing himself as a formidable opponent.
Battles with Legends

Bugner's career was marked by legendary bouts against some of the greatest fighters of his era. He shared the ring twice with Muhammad Ali, first in 1973 in Las Vegas and again in 1975 in a 15-round contest in Kuala Lumpur for the WBA, WBC, and Ring heavyweight titles. Although he lost both encounters on unanimous points decisions, his ability to go the distance with Ali highlighted his resilience. Months after his initial defeat to Ali, Bugner also faced and lost to Joe Frazier in Earls Court, London.
Titles and Tough Opponents
A crowning achievement for Bugner came in 1971 when he defeated Henry Cooper on points to clinch the British, European, and Commonwealth championships. He successfully defended his European heavyweight title against Jurgen Blin just two months later before eventually losing his trio of belts to Jack Bodell in September of that year. He also fought against other notable boxers such as Earnie Shavers and future world champion Frank Bruno, whom he lost to via TKO in 1987. His impressive professional record concluded with 69 wins, 41 by knockout, 13 losses, and one draw.
Life After Boxing
After hanging up his gloves, Bugner explored various other ventures. He operated his own vineyard in Australia, ventured into the film industry, and even served as an adviser to Russell Crowe for the boxing movie Cinderella Man. In 2009, he appeared on the reality television show I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, lasting 16 days before being eliminated after a bushtucker trial.
Legacy and Tributes
Tributes have poured in for Bugner from across the boxing community and beyond. Promoter Frank Warren expressed his sadness, remembering Bugner as a great man who went the distance with Ali and Frazier, and noting Bugner's participation in Warren's first fight on ITV. Social media users also shared their condolences, acknowledging Bugner's fighting spirit and his legacy as a boxer who competed with the best in the golden era of 1970s heavyweights, though he never claimed a world title.
