Boxing Sensation Canelo Alvarez Prepares for Monumental September Return
Renowned undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is set to make his highly anticipated return to the ring on September 12, as announced by Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority, alongside Alvarez himself. The event, billed “Mexico Against the World,” will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, coinciding with Mexican Independence Day. It will also mark the inaugural card for Canelo Promotions. While Alvarez’s opponent has not yet been confirmed, Alalshikh indicated that the 35-year-old champion is expected to compete for a world title in the main event.
Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) has been inactive since his unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford last September. Following that defeat, he underwent elbow surgery and had initially aimed for a February return. However, additional recovery time was required, resulting in his comeback being rescheduled to September.
The super middleweight division has evolved since Alvarez’s last fight. The WBC, IBF, and WBO titles are now vacant following Crawford’s retirement, while Jose Armando Resendiz has been elevated to full WBA champion. Meanwhile, Diego Pacheco and Hamzah Sheeraz are set to contest the vacant WBO title, creating the potential for future matchups and title unifications involving Alvarez.
