Boxing Legend Ricky Hatton's Tragic Passing: Tributes & Funeral Details

Boxing legend Ricky Hatton was laid to rest today in a deeply moving funeral service held in Manchester, attended by a multitude of loved ones, admirers, and famous faces. The beloved former light welterweight champion, known affectionately as 'The Hitman', was discovered deceased at the age of 46 in his Hyde residence on September 14.
Among the mourners, Coronation Street actress Claire Sweeney was visibly emotional, shedding tears as she paid her final respects. Claire, who shared an eight-month romantic relationship with Hatton that transitioned from friendship and later back to friendship, posted a heartfelt tribute days after his passing, declaring she would 'always love' and 'adored' the fighting icon. Their connection blossomed after their appearance on ITV's Dancing On Ice, leading to public outings and an official debut at the Co-op Live Arena in May 2024. Sources described their chemistry as 'electric,' with Hatton reportedly 'besotted' by Claire, who prioritized her son.
The funeral service at Manchester Cathedral saw a host of celebrities gathering to honour Hatton’s memory. Notable attendees included musician Liam Gallagher, football hero Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen, entertainer Paddy McGuinness, darts champion Phil 'The Power' Taylor, and boxing giants Tyson Fury and Frank Bruno. His hometown streets were packed this morning as the hearse transported his coffin towards the cathedral, marking a widespread public outpouring of grief and respect.
The tribute journey commenced at 9:45 am from the Cheshire Cheese pub on Stockport Road in Hyde, proceeding through significant locations in Hatton's life. The procession paused at the Harehill Tavern in Hattersley and The New Inn on Mottram New Road – a pub once owned by Hatton's parents – where a poignant dove release took place. The cortege then visited Hatton's Gym and Betta Bodies Gym in Denton, where he trained for his world title fights, before arriving at Manchester Cathedral for the invitation-only service.
Following the private service, the cortege journeyed to Manchester City's Etihad Stadium shortly after 1:15 pm UK time, allowing fans another opportunity to pay their respects to the devoted Manchester City supporter. A further private service was scheduled to take place after its passage through the stadium.
Ricky Hatton's sudden passing at 46 came as a profound shock to his family, friends, and the global boxing community. He was discovered by his long-time manager and friend, Paul Speak, on the morning of September 14. Greater Manchester Police were called at 6:45 am and confirmed that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his untimely death, allowing the focus to shift towards celebrating his remarkable life and legacy. His family stated that, despite past struggles, Ricky was believed to be 'in a good place' in the weeks leading up to his death, excited for the future, and had plans for a comeback exhibition bout in Dubai on December 2, 2025, against Eisa Al Dah, with his daughters Millie and Fearne at the centre of planned celebrations.
