Boxing Blockbuster: Canelo vs. Crawford - All You Need To Know Before Saturday's Epic Fight!
Two of boxing's most dominant figures, Canelo Alvarez and Terence "Bud" Crawford, are set to clash in a highly anticipated, once-in-a-generation showdown on September 13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. This legacy-defining event will see Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs), the reigning WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF super middleweight champion, defend his undisputed titles against the undefeated, four-division king Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs), who is making a significant move up two weight classes to 168 pounds.
The bout, scheduled to stream live and exclusively on Netflix globally, kicks off its coverage at 3:30 p.m. ET, with the main card expected to begin at 8 p.m. ET and main-event ring walks around 11 p.m. ET. This rare occasion brings together two of ESPN's top-ranked pound-for-pound fighters, with Canelo currently at No. 8 and Crawford holding the No. 3 spot. The event is a culmination of a six-year debate over who holds the top pound-for-pound position.
Canelo, 35, enters the fight having defeated William Scull in May, securing his undisputed 168-pound championship for the second time. Despite the victory, that performance was widely criticized as anticlimactic and disappointing due to his low punch output. Crawford, 37, will end a year-long hiatus, having last fought in August 2024 when he captured the WBA junior middleweight title from Israil Madrimov. This too was a tactical chess match that left Crawford feeling somewhat disappointed despite the win, as it went the distance.
The motivation behind this monumental clash is multifaceted. Canelo, after a series of decision wins against lesser-known opponents and a loss to Dmitry Bivol in 2022, reportedly ran out of compelling options. The fight gained traction through the influence of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority chairman, Turki Alalshikh, and a lucrative four-fight offer from Riyadh Season that Canelo accepted. For Crawford, his insatiable desire to overcome adversity and the potential for a substantial payout drove him to pursue the fight, despite Canelo initially dismissing it due to their size difference. Crawford's challenge is steeper, as he is moving up significantly to face an undisputed champion, whereas Canelo's previous ventures into higher weight classes were against older or less dominant opponents, such as Sergey Kovalev in 2019.
A win for Crawford would be historic, making him the only male boxer in the four-belt era to be an undisputed champion in three weight classes. This achievement would almost certainly elevate him to the top spot in the pound-for-pound rankings, a position currently held by Oleksandr Usyk. For Canelo, a victory would solidify his legacy and likely move him up from his No. 8 ranking, though it might not be enough to surpass Usyk, Naoya Inoue, or Bivol, given that he would be defeating a naturally smaller opponent.
Looking back at their careers, both fighters boast impressive highlight reels. Canelo's best performance is often cited as his unanimous decision win over Gennadiy Golovkin in their third fight in September 2022, a victory that settled their rivalry and helped him rebound from his loss to Bivol. His most devastating knockout came against Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round in November 2019, where he moved up two divisions to claim the WBO light heavyweight belt. The controversial split draw against Golovkin in September 2017 is considered his most important fight, as it spurred him to achieve greater success and silence critics. His most dominant win was an eighth-round TKO of Billy Joe Saunders in May 2021, a fight that drew a record indoor boxing crowd.
Crawford's career is marked by his technical master class against Errol Spence Jr. in July 2023, where he scored a ninth-round TKO to become the undisputed welterweight champion, a performance widely regarded as his best. His best knockout was against Yuriorkis Gamboa in the ninth round in June 2014 during his first world title defense, where he dropped Gamboa four times. The unanimous decision win over Ricky Burns in March 2014, which earned him the WBO lightweight title, is seen as his most important fight, launching his storied career. His dominant sixth-round TKO over Amir Khan in April 2019 showcased his power, speed, and ring intelligence, effectively taming a faster opponent.
