Borno Under Siege: Boko Haram Strikes Police Station, Four Officers Dead

An attack by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists on the Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters in Borno State on Saturday, April 4, 2026, resulted in the deaths of at least four police personnel. The assault, which commenced around 1:00 a.m., saw a large number of attackers storming the police formation and engaging personnel in a prolonged gun battle. The terrorists ultimately overpowered the officers, leading to the tragic loss of lives.
The confirmed casualties from the attack include Inspector Samuel Ezekiel, attached to Nganzai Division; Inspector Sanusi Mohammed of 58 PMF Lafia, who was on special duty; Police Constable Bitrus Luka; and Police Constable Shaibu Bukar, both of whom were attached to the crack squad in Maiduguri. According to ASP Kenneth Daso, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, the attackers utilized sophisticated weapons, including Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs), causing significant damage to a section of the station and partially burning an unserviceable Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC).
Following the devastating incident, the Commissioner of Police in Borno State visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment. He addressed the officers and men of the division, offering condolences for the loss of their colleagues and commending those who bravely resisted the attackers despite facing overwhelming firepower. Security agencies have since placed tactical teams on high alert and intensified operations in the general area to counter further terrorist activities.
The four fallen officers were laid to rest on Sunday in solemn interment ceremonies held at Kawar Maila Burial Ground and the Maximum Prison Burial Ground in Maiduguri. The burials were conducted according to both Islamic and Christian rites, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the deceased. The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, along with the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations), ACP Jawi A. Mohammed, and other senior officers of the command, attended the event. Officers from the Command Chaplaincy, including CSP Bukar M. Gajibo (Imam) and CSP Theophilus Mutum (Chaplain), performed the religious rites, offering prayers for the repose of the officers.
The Borno State Police Command honored the slain officers as gallant personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, commending their courage and unwavering commitment to national service. Authorities reiterated their commitment to sustaining operations against terrorist elements in the region to ensure the safety and security of the populace.
