Boris Johnson swigs Champagne from bottle in Capri

A video posted on social media shows Boris Johnson belting out karaoke songs and glugging Dom Pérignon from the bottle at celebrity hotspot Taverna Anema e Core in Capri.
While enthusiastically waving Union Jack flags, Johnson sung Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond, as well as Hey Jude by The Beatles and Mamma Mia by Abba. The former Prime Minister, decked out in Tshirt and shorts, and at one point a sombrero, gave the tunes some welly, arms outstretched above his head.
A local gentleman, who did not want to be named, told The Telegraph: “It is great for Capri to see someone like Boris Johnson relaxed on holiday and expressing himself with so much passion. It is great for the island’s image.”
Gianluigi Lembo, the owner of the nightclub Johnson was partying in, posted a photograph of the two on Friday 11 July on his Instagram account, with the caption: “Benvenuto a Capri @borisjohnsonofficial! @tavernaanemaecore loves you”.
Taste for Tignanello
As db reported in an exploration of the favourite drinks of British Prime Ministers, Johnson is also partial to Italian red wine, including Super-Tuscan Tignanello, which he discovered when someone gifted him a case.
However, during an interview with Politico Playbook he appeared to forget the name of the iconic wine, saying: “It’s not Tempranillo. But it’s some word that ends in ‘illo.’ Hang on. Not pillow, brillo. Hang on, hang on. Wait a mo. It is absolutely delicious…
“Someone bought me a crate of it, and I had no idea how expensive it was. I was just, you know, glugging it back. It turned out that it’s literally £180 a bottle. It’s extraordinary stuff.”
Johnson, who was Prime Minister from 2019 to 2022, once claimed “I can drink an awful lot at lunch, like my icon Winston Churchill.”
He added: “I can drink an awful lot at lunch and then write very fluently and fast. But if I drink at dinner, it just peters off.”
In 2008 he told The Guardian that his favourite food and drink pairing “is probably bangers, mash and mustard, with red wine. I do drink quite a lot of wine: red, white, or Champagne. It doesn’t matter if it’s expensive or not because all wine is good.”
Dom Pérignon
Champagne house Dom Pérignon has long been a favourite with celebrities, and has collaborated with the likes of Lady Gaga, David Lynch, Zoë Kravitz and Tilda Swinton in the past.
The Maison recently unveiled a photographic campaign called ‘Creation,’ which captures celebrity portraits shot by photographer Collier Schorr. In each of the photos the celebrity wears black, and clutches a bottle of 2015 Vintage Dom Pérignon. Visitors to the artistic showcase, which opened in London on 16 May, followed a spiral-shaped path through three thematic spaces – past, present and future – tracing the Maison’s history of artistic collaborations.
According to data from luxury retailer Fenwick, Dom Perignon is the second most frequently cited Champagne brand in musical lyrics, racking up more than 180 mentions in songs by artists including Notorious B.I.G, Jay-Z, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry.
