The young man, who was shot at point-blank range during the protests in Nairobi county, was laid to rest on Friday, July 11.

He was buried in his home village in Murang’a county, in a ceremony attended by friends, family, colleagues, politicians, and human rights activists.

Drama erupted when Boniface's coffin was ferried to the grave following the normal burial proceedings.

"Mad drama at mask seller Boniface Kariuki's burial as Gen Zs chant ‘Ruto Must Go!’ and ‘Wantam’ slogan," read the caption on a Facebook post.

Furious Gen Zs carried their fellow Gen Z's coffin to the gravesite in unity as they continued to chant.

At some point, it appeared the coffin was not properly closed, causing a nervous and anxious moment.

However, the pallbearers carefully carried it as they made their way to the resting place of the mask vendor.

After placing the coffin, ready to be lowered into the grave, the chanting of anti-Ruto slogans continued.

Some mourners wailed in pain as they prepared to lower the white coffin, which was draped with the Kenyan flag.

They surrounded the gravesite in large numbers, with some struggling to hold back the crowd to prevent people from falling into the grave.

Several political leaders stood solemnly next to the grave, their faces etched with sorrow.

They did not join the Gen Zs in their chanting or attempt to calm them, instead remaining deep in thought.

Bishop Ben Muthee Kiengei, who led the burial from a pastoral perspective, began singing to help calm the rowdy crowd.

Gradually, the crowd quieted down and even joined the man of God in singing the emotional song.

Social media users were heartbroken by the scene and penned emotional messages in the comment section:

Kenyan Boy:

"Shame on the policeman who did this! God is watching."

Senetah General:

"Let's keep this memory for August 2027. Na mchukue kura kwa wingi, Gen Z."

Shooting Staar:

"Alafu nyinyi Gen Z's, mchukue votes and be ready to eject Ruto out of Kenya in August 2027. Msikuwe na loud mouth bila instruments of work. I thank you."

Monicah Gichichio:

"We need justice for Boniface."

In another moment, Susan Njeri, Boniface’s mother, was overwhelmed by emotion during the reading of her tribute.

The grieving mum needed support as she leaned on the woman who read the tribute on her behalf.

Soon after, the Mike Sonko Rescue Team had to intervene and carry Njeri from the podium after she fainted.

It was the second time she collapsed that day, having earlier fainted during her son's body viewing and being rushed to the hospital.
