BMW Unleashes Exclusive 2027 M3 CS Manual for North American Thrill-Seekers

BMW has unveiled the 2027 M3 CS Handschalter, a highly anticipated model designed exclusively for the North American market. This special edition M3 CS distinguishes itself by offering a six-speed manual transmission, catering directly to driving enthusiasts who prefer a more engaged and active driving experience. The term "Handschalter," derived from German, directly translates to "hand switch" or "hand shift," perfectly encapsulating the vehicle's unique selling proposition. This model is a significant development, as it marks the first time an M3 CS variant has ever been produced with a manual gearbox, a testament to the persistent demand from American enthusiasts for such performance cars.

The M3 CS Handschalter is engineered as a compelling fusion of components from both the standard M3 and existing M CS models. Under the hood, it features a potent 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, borrowed from the M3 lineup. This powerhouse delivers a robust 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Power is channeled exclusively to the rear wheels through the aforementioned six-speed manual transmission and an electronic limited-slip rear differential, ensuring a pure and thrilling driving dynamic that traditionalists will appreciate.

Interestingly, BMW has opted not to equip the M3 CS Handschalter with the more powerful 550-hp and 479-lb-ft I-6 engine found in some other M models. The reason, according to BMW, is that the manual transmission cannot reliably handle the increased power output. Despite this, the M3 CS Handschalter is still expected to deliver exhilarating performance. BMW estimates a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.8 seconds (or 4.1 seconds without rollout), which would place it approximately 1.1 seconds behind the all-wheel-drive M3 Competition previously tested. This performance profile still ensures a rapid and engaging experience for those who value driver involvement above ultimate straight-line speed.
