BMW's Next-Gen EV Revolution: Neue Klasse & iX3 Revealed as Brainy Powerhouses

BMW has officially unveiled the iX3, marking it as the first model of its new Neue Klasse generation to enter series production. This launch signifies a monumental reinvention for the automaker, akin to the original Neue Klasse cars of the 1960s that revived BMW from financial distress. The company has made its largest investment in history, committing to this new vision across design, architecture, technology, software, and manufacturing. While the iX3 is the initial offering, the Neue Klasse architecture, starting with EVs, will influence 40 vehicles—including SUVs, sedans, coupes, and potentially supercars—with various powertrains by the end of 2027.
The launch specification iX3 50 xDrive boasts impressive performance figures, featuring 463-470bhp and 476lb ft of torque. Power is delivered to all four wheels via twin motors utilizing BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. This setup allows for a 0-62mph acceleration in just 4.9 seconds and a top speed limited to 130mph. Crucially, the iX3 is equipped with a substantial 108.7kWh usable battery, employing advanced new cylindrical cells and 800-volt technology, promising an impressive WLTP range of up to 500 miles, with estimates for the US version around 400 miles. Recharging is exceptionally fast, with 400kW charging capability adding approximately 217-231 miles of range in a mere 10 minutes, and a 10-80 percent charge achievable in 21 minutes. This represents a significant 30 percent increase in charging speed compared to models with fifth-generation eDrive technology. BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive also contributes to a 40 percent reduction in energy losses, a 10 percent decrease in weight, and a 20 percent cut in manufacturing costs, all highlighting enhanced efficiency and sustainability.
At the heart of the Neue Klasse vehicles is a revolutionary electronics architecture, described by BMW as a “digital nervous system,” and by industry partners as “superbrain” technology. This system utilizes four super high-tech computers that pool their processing power to manage nearly every function in the car. The primary computer for driving, known as “Heart of Joy,” controls the motors, brakes, steering, and all safety systems, making decisions up to 10 times faster than conventional control units. This advanced integration reportedly allows for 98 percent of braking maneuvers to be performed using regeneration alone and introduces a ‘Soft Stop’ function for the smoothest stopping process ever achieved by a BMW. This 'superbrain' technology was co-developed with semiconductor supplier Qualcomm as the Snapdragon Ride Pilot, designed for automated driving. It features a hybrid AI system running both onboard and in the cloud, enhancing reliability and flexibility. It utilizes 360-degree fisheye cameras for advanced object detection, reducing latency and improving performance in complex scenarios. The scalable system has been tested in 60 European and North American countries for the iX3's launch, with a goal to expand to over 100 countries by 2026.
Visually, the iX3 introduces a completely new design language for BMW, aiming for a “reduced” and “contemporary” aesthetic that still exudes an aggressive stance. While BMW refers to it as a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) rather than an SUV, its appearance is notably striking with sharp creases and a prominent roof spoiler. The vertical kidney grille, a homage to the 1960s Neue Klasse cars, can be illuminated with the ‘BMW Iconic Glow’ option, featuring animated greetings. The vehicle boasts a low drag coefficient of 0.24, enhancing aerodynamic efficiency.
Inside, the iX3 offers a leather-free interior, emphasizing sustainable materials, with a dash made from 3D knit recycled plastics and old fishing nets. The cabin features a wraparound dash and the innovative BMW Panoramic iDrive system, designed for a “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” principle. A 'BMW Panoramic Vision display' stretches across the bottom of the windscreen, showing driving information and customizable widgets. An optional 3D head-up display and a distinctively shaped central infotainment screen are also present. The vehicle runs on 'BMW Operating System X' software, allowing for various apps, including music, video games, streaming, and even Zoom. The new steering wheel incorporates haptic feedback ‘buttons’. Practicality is enhanced with noticeably increased rear legroom, a 520-liter boot, and a 58-liter frunk for additional storage, perfect for charging cables. Nearly one-third of the new iX3 is made from secondary raw materials, and the 50 xDrive variant boasts a 34 percent smaller carbon footprint over its lifecycle. The Hungarian factory where it's built operates without fossil fuels during normal production.
UK deliveries of the iX3 50 xDrive are scheduled to begin on March 7, 2026, with European launch in March 2026 starting at €68,900, and an estimated US launch in summer 2026 with prices opening at around $60,000. Three trim levels will be available: iX3, iX3 M Sport, and iX3 M Sport Pro. Standard features include 20-inch wheels, heated front seats, extensive driver assistance tech, cruise control, and an intelligent charging flap that uses AI to detect user intent. Furthermore, the iX3 supports bidirectional charging, allowing it to power homes or devices and even send power back to the grid in some regions. Future variants, including an entry-level model, are planned, with BMW intending to produce six EVs in the U.S. by the end of 2030.
Beyond the iX3, the Neue Klasse family will soon expand with the BMW i3 saloon, set to be fully unveiled next year. This model, an electrified version of the new 3 Series, will also feature the same 108.7kWh battery as the iX3, promising a long range. Both petrol and electric M3s are also confirmed as part of the broader Neue Klasse strategy.
