BMW's New 3 Series Wagon Emerges, US Market Left in Suspense

BMW has officially confirmed the development of a Touring wagon version for its forthcoming 3 Series sedan, sparking excitement among enthusiasts. The announcement was made by Oliver Zipse, BMW Group chairman of the board of management and CEO, at the conclusion of the all-electric 2027 BMW i3's world premiere event in Munich, Germany. Zipse emphasized that the 3 Series portfolio extends beyond just the sedan, explicitly stating, "The 3 Series has always been about much more than a sedan. I don’t want to reveal everything today, but there’s one model I’m happy to confirm: the BMW 3 Series Touring."
While no definitive images of the new wagon were showcased, a digital outline displayed behind Zipse during the event clearly depicted an unmistakable wagon-like silhouette, hinting at the design direction. Specific details regarding the powertrain options for the new 3 Series Touring, whether all-electric or traditional internal combustion, were not disclosed by Zipse or by Bernd Koerber, senior vice president of BMW brand and product management, in subsequent discussions. However, Koerber's general comments suggested that wagon variants across various 3 Series powertrains could be a possibility, with the ultimate decision contingent on market relevance and appropriate powertrain choices for specific geographies.
A significant point of discussion revolved around the potential availability of the new 3 Series wagon in the U.S. market. Koerber expressed a hopeful outlook, stating, "There is a chance." He referenced positive internal discussions with BMW's U.S. product council and the surprisingly favorable reception of the 5 Series Touring, particularly the popular BMW M5 Touring, as indicators of a growing interest in wagons as a "lifestyle thing." Koerber further acknowledged that BMW is well aware of American consumer demand for wagons, confirming that the company receives ample emails and letters on the subject, implying that no additional petitions or direct messages are required to convey interest. The article also suggests that should the 3 Series Touring make its way to the U.S., it would most likely be in the high-performance M3 Touring configuration.
