Bloodbath in Plateau: Gunmen Unleash Coordinated Attacks, Killing 18

Coordinated attacks by gunmen tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 18 persons in the Kawel and Kopkon communities within the Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State. The devastating incidents occurred around 1:20 a.m. on June 20, prompting an immediate response from security forces.

Security sources, as reported by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, detailed how assailants stormed Kawel and Kopkon villages. They indiscriminately opened fire on residents before fleeing the scene as security operatives were mobilized. Upon arrival, troops from Sector 5, operating under Operation Enduring Peace, confirmed the recovery of 12 bodies from Kawel village and an additional six from Kopkon village, bringing the total confirmed fatalities to 18.

Following the discovery, security personnel swiftly launched extensive offensive operations across the surrounding areas. The primary objective of these operations is to track down and apprehend the suspects responsible for these heinous acts, aiming to bring them to justice.

These latest killings underscore a disturbing resurgence of violence plaguing Plateau State. Rural communities, despite increased security deployments, continue to endure deadly attacks. In response to these recurring incidents, Operation Enduring Peace has intensified its patrols and reinforced security presence in the most vulnerable parts of the state.

The pattern of violence extends beyond these recent attacks. In May, no fewer than 12 individuals lost their lives in separate assaults on communities in Riyom and Bassa Local Government Areas. Similarly, in March, gunmen were reportedly responsible for the deaths of 27 residents in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area. These incidents, alongside related reports of gunmen killing 10 and seven in other Plateau attacks, highlight the severe and persistent security challenges confronting communities across the state.

The Plateau State Government has issued a strong condemnation of the attack on Kawel community, acknowledging the tragic loss of lives and injuries sustained by residents. In a statement released on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, the government unequivocally described the attack as senseless and extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has taken decisive action, directing security agencies to intensify their operations in the affected areas. His directive emphasizes the critical need to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the violence. Furthermore, the governor instructed emergency management and humanitarian agencies to provide comprehensive support to the victims and their affected families, including those currently receiving medical treatment in hospitals.

The state government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of its citizens and to preventing criminal elements from undermining ongoing efforts to promote peace and development within Plateau State. It urged residents of Kawel community, Mushere Chiefdom, and indeed all parts of the state, to maintain calm and to actively cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist in ongoing investigations and operations.

Additionally, the government issued a stern warning against any acts of reprisal, stressing that all individuals responsible for the attack would be brought to justice exclusively through lawful means. This commitment to maintaining peace, security, and the rule of law across the state remains paramount amidst the current challenges.
