Blockbuster News: Brendan Fraser's 'The Mummy 4' Titled 'The Book of the Dead,' Sets 2027 Release!

The highly anticipated fourth installment in "The Mummy" saga, titled "The Mummy: Book of the Dead," is set to hit theaters on October 15, 2027. This upcoming legacy horror sequel marks a significant return for the beloved franchise, continuing the story that began with 1999's "The Mummy" and its follow-up, 2001's "The Mummy Returns." The film will notably disregard the events of 2008's "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," particularly the recasting of a key character.

Fans will rejoice at the reunion of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, who are reprising their iconic roles as adventurers Rick and Evie O'Connell. Weisz, who was notably absent from the third film (where her role was played by Maria Bello), returns to her original character. They will be joined by other familiar faces, including John Hannah as Evie's brother Jonathan Carnahan, Oded Fehr as mystic warrior Ardeth Bey, and Kevin J. O'Connor as the hapless Beni Gabor. New additions to the cast include Michael Johnston and Numan Acar.

The title, "The Mummy: Book of the Dead," holds deep significance for both the franchise's past and its future. The Book of the Dead, an ancient Egyptian funerary text, has been a pivotal plot device in the series. In the first film, its unearthing accidentally awakens the immortal sorcerer Imhotep. In "The Mummy Returns," it is used both to resurrect Imhotep and, later, by Rick to restore Evie to life. Its return in the new film suggests it will once again be central to the O'Connells' lives and the mummy's afterlife, promising another thrilling adventure rooted in ancient Egyptian lore.

Behind the camera, the film is directed by the acclaimed duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known collectively as Radio Silence. Their previous work includes horror hits like "Ready or Not" and the successful 2022 revival of the "Scream" franchise. The screenplay for "The Mummy: Book of the Dead" is penned by David Coggeshall, whose credits include "Orphan: First Kill" and "The Family Plan."

The production team boasts a strong lineup of producers, including Sean Daniel, who has been involved with the last five films in the franchise (including the 2017 reboot which was a critical and commercial disappointment and ended Universal's Dark Universe ambitions). He is joined by William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment, as well as Clayton Townsend. Brendan Fraser himself will serve as an executive producer alongside Jason F. Brown of Hivemind, further solidifying the commitment to a true legacy sequel.
