Blockbuster Domination: Avatar and Zootopia 2 Command Post-New Year's Box Office!

The post-New Year’s box office saw "Avatar: Fire and Ash" firmly entrenched at the top for its third consecutive Friday, demonstrating robust staying power. James Cameron’s latest installment in the "Avatar" saga earned an impressive $14 million on Friday, experiencing only a 38% decline compared to the previous week's figures. Projections indicate that the sci-fi epic is set to accumulate an additional $36 million by Sunday, pushing its domestic cumulative total to an estimated $302 million, solidifying its dominant position in the cinematic landscape.

Following closely, a collection of strong holdovers continued to draw audiences. "Zootopia 2" notably secured the second spot on Friday, pulling in $7.1 million. This represented an approximately 6% increase in gross compared to the previous Friday, an remarkable achievement for an animated adventure that debuted over a month ago. This late-stage surge is attributed to children still being on winter break, providing a boost to family-friendly films. By Sunday, "Zootopia 2" is anticipated to add $18 million, bringing its domestic total to $362 million. The film recently made history by becoming Walt Disney Animation’s highest-grossing movie of all time, with a staggering $1.46 billion at the global box office, surpassing "Frozen 2" which earned $1.45 billion in 2019.

"The Housemaid," a Lionsgate thriller starring Sydney Sweeney, captured third place with a solid $5.2 million on Friday, matching its earnings from the prior week. This consistency highlights the film’s sustained appeal. Experts predict "The Housemaid" will add $13.8 million through Sunday, elevating its domestic total to an estimated $74.6 million as audiences follow the live-in maid with a dark past.

Rounding out the top five, A24’s unique ping pong drama "Marty Supreme" claimed fourth position, grossing $4.6 million on Friday. This figure, however, marked a 32% decline from the previous Friday's performance. The film is forecasted to reach approximately $11 million by Sunday, contributing to a domestic total of $55 million. Finally, Sony’s adventure comedy "Anaconda" secured the fifth spot, earning $3.5 million on Friday, a decline of about 34%. By the close of Sunday, "Anaconda" is expected to add $9.2 million, bringing its domestic total to an estimated $45 million.
