In one of two attacks, Melissa Hortman, a member of the Minnesota State House of Representatives, and her husband Mark Hortman were killed in the early hours of the morning at their home in the city of Brooklyn Park.

In another attack in nearby Champlin, a Democratic state senator, John Hoffman, and his wife were shot and seriously injured.
