Benue Erupts: Ex-Speaker Suspended Over Alleged Governor Impeachment Plot!

The Benue State House of Assembly made several significant decisions during its Tuesday plenary, including the suspension of a former speaker, the confirmation of previously rejected commissioner nominees, and a recommendation to lift the suspensions of key government officials. These actions underscore the dynamic political landscape within the state's legislative body.

Hon. Aondona Dajoh, the immediate past speaker of the house, was suspended for three months following a motion moved by Terna Emmanuel, representing Vandeikiya 11 State Constituency. The motion alleged that Hon. Dajoh had, the previous Thursday, convened members at his residence to initiate an impeachment move against the governor. While acknowledging the principle of separation of powers, the lawmaker condemned the alleged action, initially proposing a six-month suspension. Ruling on the motion, Speaker Hon. Alfred Emberger condemned the former speaker's actions and confirmed the three-month suspension, citing past precedents for similar offenses.

In a separate but equally important development, the House confirmed two commissioner nominees, Dr Timothy Yangien Ornguga and Mr. James Dwen, who had previously been rejected. This reconsideration came after a letter from the governor requested the House to re-evaluate its earlier decision. The governor clarified that while petitions had led to their initial rejection, neither nominee had been convicted, indicted, or made the subject of any adverse legal pronouncement by a competent court. Speaker Emberger urged the House to confirm their renomination, emphasizing that their duty was to screen and make recommendations to the governor, ultimately serving the state. Consequently, both nominees were confirmed.

Furthermore, the House recommended to Governor Hyacinth Alia that the suspension previously imposed on the chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Grace Adagba, and two other officials be lifted. This recommendation followed the submission of apology letters from Mrs. Grace Adagba, the Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area Mr. Maxwell Ogiri, and the State Lottery/Sporting Board Executive Secretary Mr. Michael Upper, all dated August 22. After contributions from members, the speaker ruled that since the suspended government officials had tendered their apologies, the House should accept them and recommend lifting their suspensions.
