Bawumia's early concession disrupted 2024 results collation - Inusah Fuseini

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has attributed the widespread incomplete collation of results from the 2024 general election to the early concession made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to the former legislator, Dr. Bawumia’s premature congratulatory message to the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama disrupted the official collation process, creating confusion and disinterest in finalising the parliamentary results.

Mr. Fuseini made these comments while reacting to the July 11, 2025, rerun of the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.

He explained that at the time of Bawumia’s concession, the EC was still in the process of collating both presidential and parliamentary results across the country.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, July 12, 2025, the former Tamale Central MP said: “It is important to note that after every election, the Electoral Commission has between 48 to 72 hours to collate and declare results.

“But Bawumia conceded long before the EC could complete its process…That action rendered every activity happening at the collation centres moot.”

“Because of that, nobody paid attention to the parliamentary results again. His early concession derailed the process.”

The former lawmaker also noted that this development had a direct impact on constituencies like Ablekuma North, where the collation of results was still ongoing when Bawumia conceded.

“He did not help hold the country together; he created confusion. There was no tension building — people were simply waiting for results. But once he conceded, people at centres like Ablekuma North, who were still collating pink sheets, saw no need to continue,” Fuseini said.

In addition to Ablekuma North, which faced issues with its parliamentary results, constituencies such as Tema Central, Okaikwei Central, Akwatia, and Nsawam-Adoagyiri also encountered challenges with their parliamentary results, which were later resolved through court-ordered recounts and recollation.
