Batman Returns! Matt Reeves' Sequel Lands Two Blockbuster Stars

Production has officially commenced for the highly anticipated superhero sequel, The Batman: Part II, with writer-director Matt Reeves confirming the start of filming. This follow-up to the acclaimed 2022 hit is slated for release on October 1, 2027, after an earlier delay from a previously announced 2026 date.

Matt Reeves has been actively using social media to reveal details about the film's expanding cast. Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne, the Dark Knight, continuing the narrative after the Riddler's devastating flood in the first installment. He will be joined by several returning key cast members: Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Batman's steadfast ally; Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne's devoted butler; Jayme Lawson as the newly elected Gotham City mayor Bella Reál; and Gil Perez-Abraham as Officer Martinez. Colin Farrell is also confirmed to return, portraying Oz Cobb, better known as The Penguin, in a smaller capacity. Farrell recently headlined the critically acclaimed HBO Max spin-off series, The Penguin, which garnered significant awards, including several Emmys.

The ensemble cast welcomes notable new additions, bringing fresh talent and intriguing character developments to Gotham. Brian Tyree Henry, recognized for his work in Atlanta and Dope Thief, has joined the cast in an unspecified role. Henry is a seasoned performer in superhero projects, having previously played Arkham Asylum clerk Carl in 2019's Joker, lent his voice to Miles Morales' father Jeff in the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse films and their sequels, and portrayed the immortal engineer Phastos in the MCU's Eternals. His upcoming projects include reprising his voice role as Jeff Morales in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and voicing a character in the animated science fiction Western Bass X Machina.

Reeves has also officially confirmed other significant new cast members. Sebastian Stan has been tapped to play District Attorney Harvey Dent, a noble prosecutor whose fate often leads to his transformation into the villainous Two-Face. Scarlett Johansson is confirmed to portray Gilda Dent, and Charles Dance has been cast as Charles Dent, introducing new figures to Gotham's complex landscape. Sebastian Koch, known for his role as Komarov in A Good Day to Die Hard and his work on Homeland, has also joined the cast in an undisclosed role, leading to speculation that he might portray a major antagonist.

While many core characters are set for their return, there is no official confirmation regarding the reappearance of Paul Dano's Riddler, Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman, or Barry Keoghan's Joker. Notably, Zoë Kravitz is not expected to return as Catwoman, which aligns with her character's departure from Gotham at the conclusion of the first film. A subtle hint about the sequel's setting comes from a snowy image shared by Reeves, suggesting that a portion of the film will unfold during the winter months.
