Bankers Football League 2025 kicks off with thrilling opening weekend

Published 15 hours ago2 minute read

The opening fixtures, played at the La McDan Astroturf and St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School pitch, set the tone for what promises to be a fiercely competitive season.

Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) announced themselves as early title contenders with a ruthless 4-0 demolition of GT Bank at St. Thomas Aquinas. The victory propelled CBG to the top of the league table on goal difference, alongside OmniBSIC and Universal Merchant Bank (UMB), who also secured emphatic wins. OmniBSIC crushed First Bank 3-0, while UMB edged a high-scoring thriller against Stanbic Bank 6-3 in a match that showcased attacking flair from both sides.

Defending champions CalBank, however, stumbled out of the gates, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Absa Bank. The result leaves CalBank languishing in the bottom half of the table, a stark contrast to their triumphant 2024 campaign.

The weekend wasn’t short of nail-biters. Ecobank drew 1-1 against NIB, while Access Bank narrowly defeated UBA 1-0. Over at St. Thomas Aquinas, Zenith Bank and GCB Bank both notched 2-0 victories against Republic Bank and Société Générale (SG), respectively, to join the early logjam of teams with three points.

First Bank endured a tough start, falling 3-0 to OmniBSIC.

The opening weekend has set a high bar for entertainment, blending one-sided routs with gritty stalemates. As the league progresses, all eyes will be on whether CBG can maintain their explosive form, if CalBank can mount a comeback, and which surprise team might emerge as a contender.

With the next round of fixtures just days away, the 2025 Bankers Football League promises more thrills, spills, and unforgettable moments. Stay tuned for weekly updates as Ghana’s banking elite chase glory on the pitch!
