Bangladesh issues arrest warrant for UK MP linked to Hasina

A UK parliamentarian, Tulip Siddiq, related to ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is facing corruption allegations. A Dhaka court issued an arrest warrant against Siddiq over accusations of illegally receiving a plot of land in a state-owned township project near Dhaka. Siddiq's lawyers claim the charges are politically motivated, echoing sentiments from Hasina's Bangladesh Awami League.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating corruption allegations against Siddiq and her family. The arrest warrant involves a 7,200 square foot plot of land near Dhaka, with Siddiq, her mother Sheikh Rehana, and her brother Radwan Siddiq named. Siddiq was also implicated in a probe against Hasina concerning a 2013 nuclear power plant deal with Russia, alleging embezzlement.

Tulip Siddiq resigned from her position as economic secretary to the UK Treasury after an investigation into her ties with her aunt's regime. While the ethics advisor found no violation of the Ministerial Code, he suggested reconsidering her responsibilities. Siddiq stated that she had become a distraction from the government's agenda.

Siddiq's lawyers deny all allegations, stating no basis for charges and no truth to receiving land illegally. They claim no evidence supports the allegations and that the charges are politically motivated. Tulip Siddiq, elected lawmaker for Hampstead and Highgate in 2015, was appointed to the government after Labour's victory last year.
