Atwoli blames leaders for Gen-Z protests, accuses Gachagua of incitement
Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has condemned political leaders he accuses of inciting Gen-Z youth to protest and destroy property across the country.
Speaking during a fundraiser for the completion of the Burinda Catholic Church in Butula Constituency, Busia County on Sunday, Atwoli cited examples of unrest in countries like Somalia and Sudan, emphasizing that Kenya must not follow the same path.
He criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of fuelling the ongoing unrest in the country, and warned that citizens would hold the former deputy accountable.
“The national government to implement firm measures to curb the unrest; the situation is scaring away investors and women and children were the most affected,” said the COTU boss.
His remarks were echoed by Butula MP Joseph Oyula, who urged the youth to maintain peace.
Gachagua himself has pointed an accusing finger at the government for the losses experienced during last week’s anti-Finance Bill 2024 anniversary protests across the country, where groups of youth burnt property and looted businesses.
While attending a service at Nyahururu's Christ the King Pro Cathedral church, Gachagua said the results of the protests squarely lie with the government that is now blaming him and the opposition for funning the violent demonstrations.
He lamented that vandalism to most businesses in major was by goons orchestrated by unnamed government officials.
Gachagua said he and his allies will not be cowed by such allegations, adding that their commitment to bring the country together is unstoppable.
