Former Vice President and presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed anguish over the recent deadly attacks on the Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where over 100 lives are feared lost.

The attacks, attributed to suspected herders, have once again thrust the state into mourning.

In a statement posted on X on Saturday night, Atiku described the incident as a “national emergency” that demands immediate and decisive action.

“I am deeply anguished and shocked by the devastating news of the fresh attacks in Benue State, where over 100 innocent lives are feared lost.

“This killing, once again targeting defenceless communities, underscores the escalating insecurity crisis facing our nation,” he wrote.

The former vice president extended his condolences to the affected families and communities, acknowledging the profound sorrow felt by those left widowed, orphaned, or displaced. He also urged the Federal Government and Benue State authorities to take swift measures to address the crisis.

Atiku also called for accelerated support efforts, emphasizing the need for medical aid, trauma counseling, and livelihood restoration for survivors and bereaved families.

Atiku concluded his statement with a plea for national unity and leadership accountability.

“I call on all Nigerians, regardless of tribe or religion, to unite in condemning this atrocity. We must hold our leaders accountable and insist on sustainable solutions to the violent tragedies claiming lives across the country,” he added.

He also offered prayers for the grieving families, asking God to “heal our nation and help us reclaim peace and security for all.”
