A student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, Muhammad Habib Husaini, has invented a digital speech transformation device that converts sign language into audio using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Husaini, a computer and communication engineering student, invented a device in the form of a hand glove known as the NHED Smart Glove, which enables people with speech impairments to have their sign language converted into audio while wearing the gloves.

The device will quickly turn their sign language to voice as they communicate via signs.

According to the information posted on its Facebook page, the university of technology revealed that the device operates using pressure sensors that, when activated, send data to the “ESP32 microcontroller”.

“This data is then sent to an SD card module, which commands it to play the corresponding audio,” the university explained.

The institution described his invention as “homemade,” emphasising that all components were sourced and built from scratch by him.

“He created the NHED Gloves to provide people with speech impairments a voice and a means to communicate. This invention offers a cheap yet advanced alternative for them.

“Habib’s words on the invention were powerful: “With the NHED Smart Glove, we are not just building a device; we are also restoring dignity and bridging the gaps in communication,” the university said.
