Asiedu Nketiah Hints at Possibility of Joining NDC Flagbearer Race

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), recently addressed swirling rumors regarding his potential bid for the party's presidential candidate position in the 2028 general election. Speaking during an interview on JoyNews on June 25, 2025, Mr. Nketiah indicated that it was prematurely early to engage in discussions about who would lead the NDC into the upcoming polls. He emphasized that such early maneuvers could be perceived as disrespectful to the Ghanaian populace.

Despite suggesting the timing was inappropriate, Asiedu Nketiah was careful not to entirely dismiss the possibility of him becoming the party’s flagbearer. He articulated a core principle of political engagement, stating that ambition is the driving force in politics. According to him, a serious politician would never rule out any position, as doing so might lead to regret later on. He elaborated, "No serious politician rules out any position. It's known that it is ambition that drives politics. And if you rush to rule things out, you get to a point where you'll be at a corner where you regret having ruled out certain positions."

The NDC national chairman, who remarkably served three terms as a Member of Parliament, revealed that his path into legislative politics was entirely unforeseen. He disclosed that he had never entertained the idea of becoming a legislator, having initially trained as a business professional with experience as a marketing manager, bank manager, and stockbroker. The notion of entering Parliament, he stated, "never crossed my mind at all."

His entry into politics, he explained, was a result of persistent encouragement from his own community and relations. He initially agreed to serve for just one term to represent his community, intending to return to other pursuits. However, due to positive reception and calls for his continued service, he remained. This personal anecdote served to underscore his broader point that unexpected opportunities and ambition guide political careers, often diverging from initial plans.
