Artist Crisis: Rusko Reveals Mental Breakdown, Announces Indefinite Music Hiatus

Veteran UK dubstep producer Rusko has announced an indefinite hiatus from his musical career and touring, citing a profound need for personal healing and recovery. In an emotional statement shared on his social media platforms on July 17, the artist candidly revealed the struggles leading to his decision. Initially hesitant about publicizing his break, Rusko expressed the difficulty in articulating his feelings, stating, “When I first decided to call it a day on music and shows I really wasn’t sure how, or even if, I wanted to share it more publicly. The truth is, I simply couldn’t have found the words.”

The core reason for his hiatus stems from a severe mental health crisis. He elaborated, “I had simply been ignoring my brain and body for far too long, I finally hit a serious breakdown point.” This realization solidified his need to step away from the demanding music industry for the foreseeable future. Rusko conveyed his apologies to fans for upcoming show cancellations, acknowledging their unwavering support over the years. He emphasized his commitment to following his instincts for healing, concluding with a hopeful yet uncertain message: “While I can’t guarantee any kind of return, I hope in my heart one day this is not goodbye, but more ‘see ya later, alligator.’”

The announcement triggered an outpouring of support from the electronic music community. The comments section of his post was filled with messages from numerous bass producers, underscoring Rusko’s significant impact. Ravenscoon praised him as “one of the all time greats and an inspiration to so many of us.” Levity highlighted his foundational role, writing, “Without you, there wouldn’t be any of us making or listening to this music we all love so much.” LSDream offered heartfelt wishes, adding, “Thank you for ur legendary pioneering and massive contributions to the culture…May you find and receive the healing u need, and the space to rest and restore.”

This is not Rusko’s first break from the public eye due to health concerns. A pillar of the U.K. dubstep scene, he previously went on hiatus in 2017 while undergoing treatment for stomach cancer. Fortunately, he announced later that same year that the treatment had been successful, and he was cancer-free, making a triumphant return to music. His impressive career includes two solo studio albums that achieved notable success on the Top Dance Albums chart: 2010’s O.M.G.! reached No. 12, and 2012’s Songs peaked at No. 10. His most recent musical endeavor was a collaborative track titled “Professor X” with Marco Strous, released just this past March.
