Arite Fulfils childhood dream, sets Guinness World Record

Published 1 day ago3 minute read

Barely one year after failing to break the Guinness World Record for the longest singing by an individual in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Afro Soul and R&B singer, Arite Monday Akosubo, popularly known as Arite, has fulfilled that dream.

The Bayelsa-born singer achieved the feat on Sunday, July 6, at Freedom Park, Lagos. She broke the previous record of 105 hours and setting a new benchmark in the process. The event attracted attention from Nigerians, with many rallying support for her online and at the venue. St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, was the official medical partner.

Speaking on why she attempted the record, the Steady Steady, Bamidele, Glory singer said: “Setting a Guinness World record has always been a childhood dream for me. I dreamt about the record when I was 14-year–old.

“Dreams are valid and you have to chase them, so, I chased mine and that’s the major reason I attempted this and also to give hope to everyone crazy enough to dream. Those who said I was crazy to attempt this are not far from the truth; only crazy people will dare not sleep for six days.

“My first attempt was in Port Harcourt on April 1, 2024. I sang for 73 hours before I passed out, and that was because I didn’t get the moral and physical support I needed. I also did not have a medical team on ground. So, a lot of factors caused the failure. But as a career driven person, a restless soul; I decided to come to Lagos to fulfil it,” she added.

On factors that worked for her success, Arite said: “First of all, love. Love cannot be over emphasised. Love was the first thing that worked for me. Everybody in Freedom Park was like a family. It’s like being with a lover; you don’t get tired and will not want the person to go.

“St. Nicholas Hospital, staff of Freedom Park, and the sponsors came through and showed me love. It was just love. All through, love worked for me. The doctor was with me and gave me glucose whenever I’m crashing. I sang for 123 hours, but for every 24 hours, I had a two-hour break and I resumed immediately.”

With a bold and expressive style, Arite has appeared on several major television shows including MTN Project Fame, The Voice Nigeria and Maltina Family Dance. Her creative versatility and stage presence have consistently set her apart in the entertainment scene.

She made her official music debut with the single, Wedding Day, in December 2019, followed by other notable releases such as Môrátò, Etarimi and her debut Extended Play (EP), Steady Steady, in July 2020. Her second EP, I Am Arité, was released in 2022, further establishing her as a powerful voice in contemporary Nigerian music.
