The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has announced a significant tribute to Lionel Messi following the football legend’s retirement from international football. All domestic league matches this weekend will observe a minute of applause in the 10th minute of play, honouring the Argentina captain's illustrious career. Messi, who is 39 years old, officially confirmed his decision on Monday to step away from the national team after a glittering international career that spanned more than two decades.

Messi’s final appearance for Argentina occurred in July, when the national team was defeated by Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. The AFA formalized the tribute in a statement on Thursday, declaring, "In tribute and homage to Lionel Messi’s career with the Argentina national team, at the 10th minute of play in all matches the referees will stop the game and a general minute of applause will be held."

Throughout his remarkable tenure, Messi solidified his place in history as Argentina’s most-capped player, boasting a record 207 appearances, and their all-time leading goalscorer with 125 goals. He famously captained La Albiceleste to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022, securing one of the most coveted titles in football, and also led the team to two Copa America titles.

This marks the second time Messi has announced his retirement from international football. Messi’s recent decision to retire was deeply personal, coming after a period of reflection on his future following the death of his father, Jorge, who passed away at 68 after a prolonged illness. The Argentine star expressed that his father’s death left him “even more convinced than before” that ending his international career was the correct path.
