Apply same approach used for Samuel Mahama on Ken Ofori-Atta - Manhyia South MP to OSP
Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah voiced his backing for the Special Prosecutor
The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has called on the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to apply the same standards in its dealings with former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as it did with Samuel Adam Mahama during the Airbus scandal.
Speaking on PM Express on JoyNews on Tuesday night, Awuah expressed his support for the Special Prosecutor, emphasising that the office exists to serve the state and fight corruption, not to engage in media battles.
“I am on the side of the Special Prosecutor because the office works for the state and it’s fighting corruption. So, I would be concerned about the way forward.
“Should the approach be a press conference to lambast or declare Ken Ofori-Atta wanted? I would take a cue from how the OSP handled the Airbus scandal,” he said.
He referenced the OSP’s report on the Airbus scandal, particularly page 14, where it was revealed that when it became difficult to reach Samuel Adam Mahama, brother of President John Dramani Mahama, for questioning, the Special Prosecutor flew out of Ghana to meet him abroad.
“There’s a precedent. The OSP has dealt with persons outside the country before. In this case, they could write to Ken Ofori-Atta’s lawyers to say, ‘Since it appears difficult for him to return to Ghana, we are ready to meet him abroad’,” he added.
Awuah stressed that the OSP had a budget of GH¢149 million at the time it undertook that move and still has the same allocation this year, making it financially feasible to do the same again.
“They did it before with the same budget. They can do it again,” he stressed.
