Apple TV's Must-Watch Sci-Fi Masterpiece: The Perfect Weekend Binge

Apple TV has firmly established itself as a premier destination for high-quality science fiction content, routinely investing in ambitious, high-concept projects and allowing its original series to cultivate dedicated fan bases over time. While many of its acclaimed sci-fi productions lean into somber, cerebral dramas, the streamer is also demonstrating a willingness to support creative risks and diversify its offerings, as evidenced by the upcoming 2025 series Murderbot.
Murderbot marks a refreshing and eccentric comedic departure for Apple TV, adapting Martha Wells' bestselling novella collection, The Murderbot Diaries. Despite the source material not possessing widespread mainstream recognition, the platform greenlit the project, with Alexander Skarsgård stepping into the titular role. Skarsgård, widely celebrated for his dramatic work, flexes his considerably underutilized comedic talents, delivering a performance that is both precisely timed and subtly vulnerable. His portrayal of Murderbot, an introverted, socially anxious cyborg, captures a character who despises small talk and violations of its autonomy, yet emerges as a complex being overwhelmed by fear, anger, defiance, gentleness, and guilt.
The series centers on Murderbot, one of many sentient cyborgs manufactured, rented as Security Units, and programmed for obedience. Having discreetly hacked its way to free will, Murderbot chooses self-preservation over its ominous name, spending its days playing the role of an obedient tool and mitigating depression by binging its favorite TV shows, particularly the Star Trek-inspired soap, The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon. The current clients, a group of "hippie scientists" who champion respect for all beings, prove to be an unexpected exception to Murderbot's general disdain for humans, potentially worth protecting. The show's creators, Chris and Paul Weitz, successfully translate the source material's charm to the screen, balancing wry, off-beat sarcasm with overt extravagance to achieve a cohesive flow, drawing humor from awkward conversations and deeply exasperated narration. The worldbuilding is sharp, retaining Wells' core themes while remaining accessible to newcomers. The supporting cast, including standout performances from Noma Dumezweni as Ayda Mensah and David Dastmalchian as Gurathin, contributes to the show's success, providing grounded humor and raw nuance.
Beyond its comedic surface, Murderbot delves into profound themes of trauma, PTSD, grief, loneliness, identity dysphoria, and the effects of bigoted dehumanization. Murderbot's overwhelming, visceral feelings manifest through neurodivergent, agender, and asexual-coding behavior, thoughtfully avoiding the trope of presenting the character as a pitiable anomaly or an outcast envying "normality." Instead, it subverts these traditions, with the heroism-averse Murderbot harboring no aspirations of becoming more human, but eventually caring for its "found family" because their virtues establish them as exceptions to its long-held "people are loathsome" rule. With 10 half-hour episodes and a second season already in the works, Murderbot is poised to become a triumphant new comfort-watch, offering both sharp humor and poignant depth.
Apple TV's impressive roster of sci-fi hits extends far beyond Murderbot. The streamer recently aired the first season of Pluribus, a new series from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul writer Vince Gilligan, starring Rhea Seehorn. This show has swiftly shattered ceilings, becoming Apple TV’s biggest sci-fi hit in history. The platform also premiered new seasons of its established series like Foundation, featuring Lee Pace, and Invasion, with Shamier Anderson. Additionally, the fan-favorite For All Mankind is set to return with its much-anticipated fifth season, which many speculate could be its last.
While Apple TV has seen massive successes, it has also experienced a misstep with Constellation, a thriller starring Noomi Rapace, which was canceled after only one season. However, one of its most important entries in the genre remains Severance, directed by Ben Stiller and starring Adam Scott. Although Severance lost its title as Apple TV’s most-watched sci-fi show to Pluribus last year, it was instrumental in attracting many subscribers to the platform. The series follows employees at Lumon Industries who undergo a procedure called "severance," splitting their personalities into separate "innies" and "outies" for their work and personal lives, respectively.
Fans eagerly await the next installment of Severance. Apple TV renewed the show for a third season just before the Season 2 finale, and production is confirmed to commence in July, as stated by star John Turturro. Jen Tullock, another cast member, has teased a dark turn for her character Devon in Season 3. Ben Stiller has also promised a shorter gap between Seasons 2 and 3 than between the first two, setting high expectations for a prompt return of this critically acclaimed and globally popular series.
