Apple TV+ Ditches the Plus Sign for Daring New Identity

Apple's premier streaming service, previously known as Apple TV+, is undergoing a significant and unexpected rebranding, adopting the simpler name, Apple TV. This change was discreetly announced in a press release detailing the December 12 streaming debut of the Brad Pitt-led film, "F1: The Movie." The company stated that Apple TV+ is now "simply Apple TV, with a vibrant new identity," a move that has yet to be fully reflected on Apple's official website but was consistently mentioned in the release's concluding service description.
The shift in nomenclature presents an intriguing situation, as the name "Apple TV" is already associated with the company's connected smart TV digital media player hardware and its integrated TV app. When Apple TV+ first launched in November 2019, the "plus" suffix was specifically added to differentiate the streaming service from these existing products. The implications of this new unified branding on the distinction between the service, the hardware, and the app remain to be seen, with no immediate indication of when the name change will officially roll out across all platforms.
This rebranding also raises questions about what constitutes the "vibrant new identity" Apple alludes to. Notably, this announcement follows closely on the heels of a substantial price hike for the service, from $9.99 to $12.99 per month, which Apple justified by citing its expanding "deep library" of content. Speculation suggests that the new identity might pave the way for an ad-supported subscription tier, a feature currently absent from Apple TV and present across nearly all other major streaming platforms. This would mark a significant strategic shift for the company in the competitive streaming landscape.
Since its inception, Apple's streaming platform has rapidly established itself as a home for prestige content, earning widespread critical acclaim and numerous awards. Its impressive content library includes Emmy-winning series such as "Ted Lasso," "Severance," "The Morning Show," "The Studio," "Silo," "Foundation," and "Slow Horses." Other notable originals span various genres, including "Presumed Innocent," "Shrinking," "Your Friends & Neighbors," "The Buccaneers," "Invasion," "Loot," "Acapulco," "Chief of War," "Palm Royale," "For All Mankind," "Schmigadoon!," "See," "Dickinson," and "Pachinko." On the film side, Apple has been behind the Oscar Best Picture winner "CODA," as well as major productions like "Killers of the Flower Moon," "Napoleon," and the upcoming "F1." Cumulatively, Apple's original films, documentaries, and series have garnered an impressive 553 wins and 2,562 award nominations to date.
Access to the newly named Apple TV streaming service is broad, available through the Apple TV app in over 100 countries and regions, reaching more than one billion screens. This includes a wide array of devices such as iPhone, iPad, Apple TV hardware, Apple Vision Pro, Mac, popular smart TVs (Samsung, LG, Sony, VIZIO, TCL, etc.), Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices, Chromecast with Google TV, and PlayStation and Xbox gaming consoles. Subscribers can also access content directly at tv.apple.com. The service is priced at $12.99 per month, with a seven-day free trial for new subscribers. Additionally, customers who purchase and activate a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, or Mac can currently enjoy three months of Apple TV for free.
This marks the first branding alteration for Apple's streaming service, a contrast to competitors like HBO Max and Paramount+, which have undergone multiple name changes. The strategic decision to simplify the name, integrate with existing branding, and potentially expand service tiers positions Apple for its next phase in the fiercely competitive global streaming market.
