Anthropic's Trillion-Dollar Ambition: $45B Deal Fuels Compute Craze!

Anthropic, a leading AI lab, has recently solidified its position in the fiercely competitive artificial intelligence landscape by securing an extensive AI compute deal with Nscale, a British AI infrastructure company founded in 2024. This significant agreement, valued at approximately $45 billion, will provide Anthropic with critical compute power utilizing Nvidia's state-of-the-art Vera Rubin chip system. The Vera Rubin system, known for its cutting-edge design, integrates six distinct chips to operate in concert, offering unparalleled processing capabilities. The compute capacity acquired through this six-year deal, first reported by Bloomberg, is slated to commence powering Anthropic's services by late 2027 and will originate from Nscale’s flagship data center located in West Virginia.

This partnership with Nscale marks the latest in a series of aggressive compute acquisition strategies undertaken by Anthropic over the past eight months. The company has been diligently scaling up its compute capacity to enhance its competitive edge against rivals, most notably OpenAI. Earlier in the month, Anthropic entered into another substantial agreement with Volta, an AI cloud startup established in January, securing a $10 billion, six-year supply of cloud computing power from a data center in Norway.

Prior to these recent deals, Anthropic had already made significant investments in its computing infrastructure. In July, the AI lab finalized a $5 billion compute-related deal with AMD. May saw the announcement of a large computing partnership with SpaceX, led by Elon Musk. This particular deal is reportedly providing Anthropic with a substantial $1.25 billion worth of compute capacity each month, drawn from two different SpaceX data centers, and is notably contextualized by Musk's rivalry with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, positioning him as an unexpected ally for Anthropic.

Further expanding its reach, Anthropic signed a deal in April to significantly broaden its existing partnership with Amazon, gaining access to an additional 5 gigawatts of compute. In the same month, the company also reinforced its relationships with technology giants Google and Broadcom, further augmenting its power capacity. This enthusiastic pursuit of AI horsepower is not unique to Anthropic; the broader industry is witnessing an intense race among major players, including Google, OpenAI, and Meta, all striving to acquire as much compute capacity as possible to fuel their advanced AI developments.
