Annecy Unleashes Animation Power: 2026 Lineup & Special Events with Pixar, Brad Bird, Rick & Morty Spinoff Revealed!

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival consistently upholds its reputation as the world's foremost animation gathering, presenting an expansive and diverse program that encompasses special events, competitive features, and pivotal industry discussions. Despite prevailing global market challenges, the festival's 2026 edition, scheduled from June 21-27, demonstrates remarkable resilience and an exceptionally rich slate of content from across the globe.
A major highlight of the special events program is the much-anticipated return of two-time Academy Award winner Brad Bird. He is set to guide audiences through his passion project, the Skydance animation feature "Ray Gunn," during a Next on Netflix showcase. This film, a labor of love over 30 years in the making, is written, directed, and produced by Bird, and boasts an impressive voice cast including Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, and Tom Waits. Netflix further enriches the festival's offerings with an exclusive preview of its upcoming animated "Ghostbusters" series, introduced by showrunners Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan. Additionally, an exclusive masterclass with multi-award-winning comedian and creator Ricky Gervais will delve into his potentially outrageous adult animated comedy "Alley Cats," providing a world exclusive sneak peek of its first two episodes ahead of its summer debut.
The festival will also bestow an Honorary Cristal upon legendary "King of the Hill" director Mike Judge, who will lead a masterclass followed by a pre-release preview of the hit series' Season 15, joined by co-creator Greg Daniels and showrunner Saladin K. Patterson. Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios will present back-to-back showcases. "Hexed" directors Fawn Veerasunthorn, Jason Hand, and Josie Trinidad will unveil never-before-seen footage from the studio’s upcoming original feature film, an all-new magical coming-of-age saga featuring Hailee Steinfeld and Rashida Jones in leading voice roles. Pixar will then offer a behind-the-scenes look at their upcoming feature "Gatto," with Academy Award-nominated director Enrico Casarosa immersing the audience in its world of Venetian canals, feline mob bosses, and trepidatious superstition, detailing its creative ethos and unique hand-painted animation style, alongside a special preview of a new Pixar short film.
Warner Bros. Animation and Adult Swim are poised to captivate animation enthusiasts with premieres and exclusive first looks. Warner Bros. Animation will host the world premiere of "Daffy Season," celebrating Daffy Duck's 90th anniversary, and provide a first look at "The Cat in the Hat." Adult Swim will also make a significant impact with big sneak previews, including the world premiere and making-of for its new series "President Curtis," co-created by "Rick & Morty" producers Dan Harmon and James Siciliano and starring Keith David. A first glimpse of "My Two Cars," a new Adult Swim comedy by Dan Licata and Joe Pera, is also slated. Independent animation studios are well represented, with LAIKA CEO Travis Knight presenting behind-the-scenes footage and preview images of "Wildwood," and Aardman also revealing upcoming projects. Further special previews include DreamWorks’ "Forgotten Island," the cult comic adaptation "Rogue Trooper," French animation powerhouse Folivari’s "Children of Liberty," and Rémi Chayé’s new film "Fleur."
Artistic director Marcel Jean highlighted the remarkable robustness of the 2026 official selection, which appears entirely untouched by the rampant market crisis affecting much of animation production worldwide. Comprising no fewer than 44 feature films, with a strong contingent of 14 French productions and entries from 26 countries, the selection underscores the burgeoning strength of the Asian market, particularly China, Korea, and the Philippines, noted for their significant evolution in relatable storytelling. This year, the Contrechamp section will introduce its own dedicated opening screening, featuring the Taiwanese rotoscope film "Welcome to Dolly’s House" ahead of the main festival opening.
The **2026 Feature Film Competition** showcases an eclectic lineup of 11 films: "Viva Carmen!" by Sébastien Laudenbach (France), an adaptation of a Spanish story; "Iron Boy" by Louis Clichy (France, Belgium), a nuanced story from a Pixar alum; "Decorado" by Alberto Vazquez (Spain, Portugal), a tale of a rebellious mouse; "The Sunrise File" by Rupert Wyatt and Émilie Phuong (France, Luxemburg), recalling the pursuit of Klaus Barbie; "In Waves" by Phuong Mai Nguyen (France, Belgium), an adaptation of A.J. The **Contrechamp Competition** also presents a compelling selection of 11 films: "58th" by Carl Joseph Papa (Philippines), a feature-length non-fiction animation recounting the 2009 Maguindanao massacre; "A New Dawn" by Yoshitoshi Shinomiya (Japan, France), a film with a sterling reputation from its Berlinale appearance; "Blaise" by Dimitri Planchon and Jean-Paul Guigue (France), evolving characters from an Arte series; "O filho da puta" by Érica Maradona, Otto Guerra, Tania Anaya, and Sávio Leite (Brazil), a story of a son searching for his father; "Muyi and the Handsome General" by Julien Chheng (France), an empowering tale from Studio La Cachette; "Pelelui: Guernica of Paradise" by Goro Kuji (Japan), a deceptive visual style tackling the cruelty of the Pacific War; "Spacetime Chronicles" by Stefano Bertelli (Italy), a surrealist papercraft stop-motion technical masterpiece; "The Obsessed" by Wataru Takahashi (Japan), a spirited and original romantic tale; "The Orbit of Minor Satellites" by Christopher Sullivan (Japan), an unconventional blend of live-action and animation exploring a patient-psychiatrist relationship; "Winnipeg, Seeds of Hope" by Beñat Beitia and Elio Quiroga (Spain, Chile, Argentina), a powerful historical drama set during the Spanish Civil War; and "Welcome to Dolly’s House" by Seven Ych, Rady Fu, and Tree Muta (Taiwan), lauded for its refined aesthetics and masterful play on fantasy conventions, serving as the section's opening film.
Beyond the extensive film screenings, the festival actively bolsters the animation industry through significant initiatives such as the new **Animation International Institute**. This permanent space, opening June 19, will serve as a hub for screenings, artist engagement, and exhibitions, further cementing Annecy's role in the global animation landscape. The **MIFA (International Animation Film Market)** will host a crucial European Animation Summit, directly addressing contemporary industry challenges by focusing on the transformative roles of AI and private investment in shaping the future of animation.
Complementing the competitive and special events, the Annecy Presents section, introduced in 2024, caters to a broader audience with 15 films designed for families or Japanese anime fans. This includes European family-friendly productions like "Yugly" and "Monster Mia," acclaimed anime such as "The Ribbon Hero," and the long-awaited premiere of Cartoon Saloon's latest gem, "Julian." For dedicated animation enthusiasts, the popular Midnight Specials deliver a thrilling dose of wacky sci-fi comedies like "Soul Shift," low-budget indie thrillers such as "Gregor," and intense Japanese sword fights like "Sekiro: No Defeat."
The Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026 truly stands as a vibrant, comprehensive hub, celebrating the artistry, innovation, and global reach of animated storytelling while also actively engaging with the critical discussions that are shaping its evolving future.
