Anime Sensation 'Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle' Obliterates Box Office Records

The highly anticipated film, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle,” has made an explosive debut at the box office, setting a new record for the biggest opening ever for an anime film. It debuted to a mighty $70 million, more than doubling the previous benchmark of $31 million held by 1999’s “Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back.” This remarkable performance also surpassed its predecessor, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train,” which garnered $21 million in its domestic debut and went on to gross over $500 million worldwide. Prior to its domestic release, “Infinity Castle” had already amassed over $300 million internationally, with its cumulative global haul now standing at $435 million. It has become the biggest hit of the year in its native Japan, earning over $200 million and becoming the country's third-highest-grossing release of all time.
“Infinity Castle” is the inaugural installment in what is planned as a series-capping trilogy. It is available in both subtitled and dubbed versions and has benefited from screenings in premium large format theaters like Imax, which command steeper ticket prices. This strong opening marks a significant win for Sony’s anime distribution banner, Crunchyroll, providing a much-needed hit after a quieter summer that saw the studio release modest performers and misses such as “Caught Stealing,” “Karate Kid: Legends,” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” The film’s $70 million domestic debut also made it Sony’s biggest domestic opener in over two years, outperforming other studio releases like “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” ($56.5 million), “Venom: The Last Dance,” and “28 Years Later.”
The success of “Infinity Castle” has had a profound impact on the broader box office landscape. It contributed significantly to September becoming a month to remember, shattering projections for what was expected to be a sluggish period. Last weekend’s champion, Warner Bros. and New Line’s “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” settled for second place with $26.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $131.1 million. Both “The Conjuring: Last Rites” and “Infinity Castle” have bolstered exhibitors' hopes for a stronger-than-expected fall season after a disappointing summer. According to Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst at ComScore, the estimated total for all films for the weekend reached around $145 million, a 50% improvement over the same weekend a year ago.
The film’s critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive, holding a near-perfect 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics’ consensus describes it as “Storming the big screen with Demon Slayer's most polished presentation yet, Infinity Castle is a stirring beginning to this franchise's bloody climax.” The audience score on the aggregator website is even higher, at a
