Angola Commits $73 Million to Okavango Tourism Hub as Diversification Drive Gains Momentum
Angola is set to invest $73 million in the Okavango Tourism Development Hub, constructing integrated infrastructure to boost sustainable tourism. This strategic move aims to diversify the economy, create jobs, and attract private investment by leveraging the region's natural potential.
The Angolan government has approved a $73 million investment to develop integrated infrastructure at the Okavango Tourism Development Hub, signalling a major push to expand the country’s tourism industry.
Under Presidential Order 270/26 of August 5, the project will cover technical studies and designs alongside electricity, water, sanitation and telecommunications networks. It will also include roads, drainage systems, pedestrian walkways, viewpoints and facilities designed to support tourism activities.
The Ministry of Tourism said the investment is part of Angola’s strategy to diversify its economy, create employment and unlock the country's tourism potential. The Okavango region is classified as an Area of Tourism Interest and Potential of national strategic importance, with authorities positioning its natural assets as a foundation for an internationally competitive and environmentally sustainable destination.
The government expects the infrastructure to make the region more attractive to private investors, particularly for hotel development and other tourism-related businesses.
The project is also expected to strengthen tourism value chains and create economic opportunities for communities surrounding the development zone. President João Lourenço has directed that the initiative be incorporated into Angola’s 2026 Public Investment Programme, with the Ministry of Tourism responsible for overseeing and monitoring its implementation.
The investment highlights the government's effort to use tourism as a driver of economic and social development while reducing reliance on traditional sources of national revenue.
