Anambra Kidnap Scam: Woman, Boyfriend Busted for Faking Abduction to Extort Family

A 23-year-old woman, Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye, and her 24-year-old boyfriend, Chibuike Ogbu, have been arrested by operatives of the Anambra State Police Command for allegedly staging her own abduction. The elaborate scheme was designed to extort money from Nmesoma’s parents, according to press statements from the Command.
DAILY POST learned that the staged abduction was meticulously planned by the couple. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, revealed that intelligence-led operations uncovered the conspiracy. The suspects, Nmesoma and Chibuike, were apprehended on Friday, August 30, by police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu.
Further details from the police indicate that the duo initially demanded a ransom of N15 million from Nmesoma's parents. Following negotiations, a sum of N3 million was transferred into Nmesoma’s account. Upon their arrest, authorities successfully recovered N1.2 million, which constituted part of the ransom money paid by the family members.
Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned the incident, attributing such crimes to a growing moral decay within society. He highlighted that many young people are increasingly resorting to criminality for selfish gains. CP Orutugu urged parents, guardians, and religious leaders to intensify their efforts in inculcating discipline, integrity, and sound values in their children and wards.
The Commissioner also issued a stern warning to youths against engaging in self-destructive ventures, stressing that the
