Amazon Prime Video in India is planning to bring ads to film and TV show offerings, meaning users will have to pay an add-on fee in order to bypass these, reported tech outlet TechCrunch, citing an Amazon spokesperson.

Amazon Prime Video watchers in India will have to pay an add-on charge of ₹129 per month or ₹699 as an introductory price along with their existing membership. This is set to begin in June, per the news outlet.

The move comes months after similar policy changes came to Amazon Prime Video users in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Canada, per the outlet.

Several unhappy Amazon Prime Video subscribers shared screenshots of an email they said the company had sent them, informing them about the addition of ads and the higher-priced ad-free tier they could opt for.

Amazon already plays ads for some subscribers before their streamed content begins. In addition to this, a number of films and new releases are locked even for subscribers, who must pay in order to rent or download the offering.
