Amazon Expands Horizon: Millions of Products Now Available in Nigeria!
Nigerian consumers now have unprecedented access to the vast catalog of Amazon.com, with over 45 million items available for direct shipment to Nigeria. This significant expansion goes far beyond the initial offerings of just books, DVDs, and CDs, encompassing a diverse range of product categories including electronics, mobile phones, laptops, software, watches, fashion, baby products, and beauty items, among many others. This enhanced accessibility is largely facilitated by the AmazonGlobal program, transforming the online shopping experience for customers in Nigeria and several other African nations.
The AmazonGlobal program simplifies international online shopping by addressing common logistical challenges. As of June 2019, virtually every product that Amazon ships outside the United States is eligible for delivery to Nigeria. Nigeria is one of ten African countries, alongside South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Morocco, Tanzania, Mauritius, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Egypt, that benefits from this streamlined service. A key feature of AmazonGlobal is its ability to estimate customs duty during checkout, allowing customers to pay the applicable fees upfront via Amazon. This integrated process ensures that products are delivered directly to the customer's doorstep, bypassing the traditional hassles associated with customs clearance.
Amazon's commitment to the Nigerian market has evolved over the years. Initially, purchases from Amazon.com were severely restricted, primarily limited to media items like books, DVDs, and CDs. However, with the global surge in online retail and increasing competition from platforms like AliExpress, Amazon has proactively expanded its product categories and shipping capabilities. Customers who once bought only books, as early as 2011, can now order a wide variety of goods, including cameras, water pumps, raincoats, and phone screen replacements, reflecting the substantial growth in product availability.
In response to the competitive global e-commerce landscape, Amazon has strategically expanded its sales footprint to over 70 countries. While this is still a smaller reach compared to rivals like AliExpress, which ships to nearly every country, Amazon differentiates itself through several key advantages. The first notable advantage is the superior quality of products; Amazon maintains stricter control over its marketplace, ensuring that items offered are of high quality. The second, and perhaps most crucial, is the AmazonGlobal program itself, which elevates international online shopping to a level of ease and convenience comparable to domestic purchasing from local platforms like Jumia or Konga.
Through the AmazonGlobal program, the entire process from order to delivery is streamlined. By estimating and collecting customs duty upfront, Amazon authorizes the courier to handle all necessary customs clearance procedures at the port in Nigeria. This eliminates the need for customers to personally visit customs offices or deal with complex paperwork, guaranteeing that orders arrive at their doorstep as effortlessly as if they were purchased locally. This comprehensive approach underscores Amazon's dedication to providing a seamless and stress-free international shopping experience.
