Alonso Kicks Off Chelsea Era with Electrifying Debut Win, Rogers Strikes!
Xabi Alonso secured a winning start to his Chelsea reign with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Fulham in a west London derby. Goals from Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers, and Cole Palmer sealed the win, despite Fulham's determined efforts. The match also featured a notable reunion between Alonso and former teammate, Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa.
Yesterday, Xabi Alonso began his Chelsea reign with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Fulham in a pulsating west London derby at Craven Cottage.
This win marked a successful start for Alonso in his first competitive match as Chelsea manager, a role he took on to revive the club following their disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
Chelsea got off to a dream start when Joao Pedro fired them ahead after just 31 seconds, and the goal originated from Levi Colwill’s header, which was cleverly flicked by Cole Palmer into Pedro’s path.
The Brazilian striker maintained his composure to beat Bernd Leno with a neat finish.
However, Fulham managed to level the score in the 23rd minute after Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez made another costly error, allowing Josh King’s effort to squirm through his grasp despite it appearing saveable.
Chelsea responded strongly, and after Leno denied Romeo Lavia, new signing Morgan Rogers restored their advantage four minutes before half-time.
Rogers, who became the most expensive British player after his £117 million transferfrom Aston Villa, finished clinically from 10 yards following a low cross delivered by Maxence Lacroix.
The Blues further extended their lead four minutes into the second half when Cole Palmer expertly fired into the far corner, building on good work from Joao Pedro.
However, Fulham threatened a dramatic comeback by pulling a goal back in the 54th minute.
Robert Sanchezwas once again at fault, failing to deal with a relatively weak effort from Timothy Castagne, which allowed Gonzalo Garcia to head home the rebound on his debut.
The hosts pressed hard for an equalizer, with Josh King and Antonee Robinson coming close, but Chelsea managed to survive a frantic finale to secure a winning start for Alonso.
This was adding an intriguing layer to the match which was the reunion between Alonso and Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa.
The two had been teammates for seven years at Real Madrid and Liverpool, and also played together for Spain.
Ironically, Arbeloa had been promoted from Real Madrid B to replace Alonso after the latter's dismissal by the Spanish giants following less than eight months in charge at the Bernabeu in January.
