Alarm in Germany! Drones Spotted Over Military Base Trigger Security Concerns

German authorities are investigating two separate drone incidents that have raised significant security concerns across the country. On Thursday evening, security surveillance at a Bundeswehr base in Mechernich, western Germany, reported seeing two drones flying around 10 p.m. The sightings were promptly confirmed, leading to the deployment of military police forces to the site, and the Euskirchen police department has since opened an investigation into the matter. Details regarding this incident remain limited, as the military has not released additional information.

These recent sightings at the military base occurred just two days after a more alarming discovery at Germany’s Leipzig-Halle Airport. Shortly before midnight on Tuesday, a drone carrying explosives was found at the key cargo airport. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt characterized this incident as a “new quality of danger,” highlighting the heightened threat perception. The device, along with its detonator, was safely destroyed in a controlled explosion.

Leipzig-Halle Airport holds considerable strategic importance. It functions as a major hub for international freight and is critical for providing support to Ukraine, serving as a base for Kyiv’s national cargo carrier, Antonov Airlines, since the outbreak of Russia’s war on Ukraine in February 2022. Furthermore, the airport is home to NATO’s Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS), which operates almost daily to deliver equipment to NATO battle groups stationed along its eastern flank, from Finland to Romania, and supports EU and alliance nation missions.

This is not the first security concern at Leipzig-Halle. In 2024, an incendiary device ignited at a logistics center within the airport, setting a freight container ablaze. Western security officials suspect this incident was part of a plot orchestrated by Russian intelligence, given the broader context of alleged Russian-backed attacks and incidents across Europe since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Russian Embassy in Germany, however, dismissed the Leipzig drone incident as part of a “new wave of anti-Russian hysteria in Germany.”

The increasing frequency of drone sightings over civilian and cargo airports, and now military bases, points to a growing challenge for European security. Last year, mysterious drone flights over the airspace of several European Union member countries caused widespread alarm among the public and authorities, leading to the cancellation of dozens of flights and stranding thousands of passengers at major airports across the continent, from Copenhagen to Warsaw. These incidents underscore a persistent and evolving security threat that demands rigorous vigilance and investigation.
