Air Travel Warning: JFK Ground Stop Ends, Yet Passengers Brace for Significant Delays
Thunderstorms caused a three-hour ground stop at John F. Kennedy Airport on Sunday morning, leading to widespread flight delays across New York City's major airports. Passengers were advised to expect significant delays, although no cancellations were reported amidst the disruptions.
Air travelers experienced significant disruptions on Sunday morning as severe thunderstorms impacted major New York City airports. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop for all planes departing from John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) which lasted for three hours, beginning at 6:46 a.m. and lifting at 9:45 a.m.
Following the ground stop, the FAA advised passengers to anticipate delays of up to 75 minutes on their flights throughout the mid-morning period. The impact of the weather-related disruptions was widespread, affecting numerous flights across the region.
By 9:45 a.m., a total of 43 flights originating from JFK were reported as delayed, alongside 19 flights departing from LaGuardia Airport. Despite these extensive delays, FlightAware's tracker indicated that no flights had been canceled. LaGuardia Airport had also experienced an earlier ground stop, which was subsequently lifted.
The ripple effect of the storm extended to other regional airports as well. As of 10 a.m., Long Island MacArthur Airport reported two delayed departing flights and four delayed arriving flights, according to FlightAware. Authorities continued to monitor the situation, with updates expected on this developing story.
