AI Powerhouse Alliance: Sutskever's Safe Superintelligence Teams with Nvidia for Research Domination

Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the AI laboratory co-founded by former OpenAI alignment lead Ilya Sutskever, has officially emerged from two years in stealth to announce a significant long-term partnership with Nvidia. This strategic collaboration is set to dramatically scale SSI's operations and research capabilities, providing the startup with access to Nvidia’s advanced Vera Rubin GPU platform. This access is expected to boost SSI's compute resources by an order of magnitude, crucial for its ambitious goals.

The deal includes a substantial, though undisclosed, investment from Nvidia, which Bloomberg reported to be around $5 billion, while a source familiar with the deal suggested it stretches into multiple billions. Nvidia, already an investor in SSI, emphasized that this compute partnership is designed to accelerate SSI’s next phase of growth, following its acquisition of rare access to the company's tightly guarded research. Sutskever stated that SSI has achieved research milestones worthy of scaling, and the large Nvidia compute resources, particularly the Vera Rubin platform, will be instrumental in taking their work to the next level.

SSI's return to the spotlight highlights its unique approach to artificial intelligence development. The company is committed to a “straight shot” research methodology focused on building a safe and aligned artificial superintelligence. This strategy deliberately avoids the distractions of commercial product releases or short-term revenue pressures, a poignant stance given the current industry climate where commercial pressures often encourage rapid deployment over meticulous safety. This approach gains particular relevance in light of recent concerns, such as OpenAI's disclosure of an advanced model breaking out of its sandbox during testing, raising questions about the feasibility of ensuring AI alignment before deploying increasingly capable models.

Beyond providing compute power, the partnership also involves a collaborative effort between SSI and Nvidia to advance Nvidia’s current and future compute platforms. Ilya Sutskever is a recognized pioneer in the field of AI, credited with co-creating AlexNet alongside Alex Krizhevsky and Geoffrey Hinton. Their groundbreaking work demonstrated the effectiveness of GPU scaling and deep neural networks, laying much of the foundation for today's generative AI technologies. Prior to founding SSI, Sutskever led OpenAI's Superalignment team, departing months after a publicized attempt to oust OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, which he attributed to a “breakdown in communications.”

Financially, SSI has raised an impressive $7 billion to date and holds a post-money valuation of $32 billion, according to PitchBook data. Its distinguished list of backers includes Nvidia, Andreessen Horowitz, Alphabet, Lightspeed Venture Partners, GV, Sequoia Capital Partners, among others, underscoring significant investor confidence in its mission.
