Africa’s Travel Indaba is currently taking place in Durban, South Africa, emphasizing tourism products and accommodations across the continent, spanning destinations from Angola to Zambia. The event commenced on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, with a strong focus on the economic impact of tourism in Africa.

South Africa’s deputy president, Shipokosa Paulus Mashatile, highlighted tourism's significant contribution to Africa’s GDP, noting that in 2023, it accounted for 6.8%. In South Africa alone, tourism contributes 8.9% to the GDP and supports 1.68 million jobs. Africa’s Travel Indaba, presented by South African Tourism, is recognized as the continent's premier tourism trade show. This year’s event features 1,300 exhibitors, delegates from 27 African countries, and over 1,200 international buyers from 55 source markets, including a delegation from Canada.

South African Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille emphasized the Indaba’s role as a catalyst for inclusive growth, job creation, and sustainable tourism development across Africa. She also noted the economic power of tourism, stating that South Africa welcomed 8.9 million tourists in 2024, with their direct spending contributing R91.6 billion and supporting approximately 1.6 million jobs. In the first quarter of 2025, South Africa saw nearly 2.6 million tourists, a 5.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024. A significant 75% of South Africa’s international arrivals originate from the rest of Africa, indicating substantial potential for growth in the North American market. According to UN Tourism, Africa experienced a sharp rebound in tourism in 2024, achieving a 96% recovery compared to 2019, positioning it as one of the fastest-growing regional tourism destinations.

Also taking place at Africa's Travel Indaba in Durban is the Safari Awards. At 5:00 PM on May 14, 2025, at the Durban Exhibition Centre, the Safari Awards will honor safari organizations that have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to conservation practices across Africa. With 360 nominations, the Safari Awards highlight the growing recognition of sustainable tourism. These awards celebrate organizations that excel in safeguarding Africa’s wildlife and wild spaces, ranging from luxury lodges to pioneering conservation initiatives. This year’s edition includes 18 categories, expected to cover various aspects of responsible tourism and celebrate excellence in African safaris.

The nomination process for the Safari Awards underscores rigorous standards, with over 20 nominees already recognized among Africa’s most prestigious safari experiences. These nominees represent diverse organizations, each contributing uniquely to conservation. The Safari Awards provide a crucial platform for promoting responsible tourism, encouraging other operators to prioritize conservation, thereby ensuring the long-term sustainability of Africa’s biodiversity and safari experiences. The awards recognize passion, dedication, and a commitment to protecting Africa’s natural wonders, demonstrating that exceptional safari experiences and impactful conservation go hand in hand.
