AFCON Heroics: Stanley Nwabali Crowned as Nigeria Secures Bronze Against Egypt!

Nigeria concluded their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 campaign triumphantly, securing the bronze medal after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Egypt. The third-place playoff, held in Casablanca at the Stade Mohammed V, remained goalless after a tense 90 minutes, setting the stage for a decisive shootout where Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero.
Nwabali delivered a standout performance, saving crucial spot-kicks from Egypt's Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush, which significantly shifted the momentum in Nigeria's favor. Following Nwabali's heroics, Akor Adams, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, and Ademola Lookman all converted their penalties calmly, sealing a 4–2 victory for Nigeria. This win marked Nigeria's ninth third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations, maintaining their impeccable record in bronze medal matches.
The match itself was characterized by its intensity and defensive solidity rather than numerous scoring opportunities. Egypt came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half when Salah set up Mahmoud Trezeguet, but Nwabali quickly advanced to thwart the effort. Salah later tested the Nigerian keeper twice, but the defense held firm. Nigeria had their own chances, with Akor Adams seeing a close-range header disallowed by VAR for a foul in the build-up just before halftime. After the restart, Ademola Lookman also had a goal chalked off for offside, further underscoring the tight nature of the contest. With both teams displaying strong defensive discipline and a cautious approach, a penalty shootout became an almost inevitable conclusion, and Nigeria ultimately demonstrated superior composure.
Reflecting on the arduous encounter, Stanley Nwabali expressed the difficulty of facing a formidable Egyptian side. “It was a very difficult match against a great Egyptian team. Both sides were solid and no one wanted to make a mistake,” he commented. Regarding the shootout, he added, “During the penalty shootout, I stayed calm. I tried to read the takers and trust my instinct. Thankfully, it worked for us.”
Egypt’s head coach, Hossam Hassan, acknowledged the fine margins that decided the game. “It was a very evenly matched game against a strong Nigerian team,” Hassan stated. “In matches like these, things are decided by details. Today, the outcome was determined by penalty kicks.” He commended his players for their “great character and strong discipline,” accepting that “Penalty shootouts are part of football. Sometimes they go in your favor and sometimes they don’t.”
For Nigeria’s coach, Eric Chelle, the bronze medal symbolized more than just a match result. “I am very proud to be the coach of the Nigerian national team,” Chelle shared. “This team gave everything—not only in this match, but over the past two months and throughout a full year of continuous work.” Looking towards the future, Chelle emphasized the long-term vision: “This match is not just a one-night story; it is part of a longer journey that concerns the future of this team.”
